Folks,

"Drunk me" used the CC last night and bought, not only "Sober me", but my whole family a holiday in Phuket next year. The deal does not include flights.

Here's my question to the well-travelled folks on this site - Can one buy the cheap-ass flight tickets which say "no luggage" and pay separately for luggage later? And if so, would these charges suggest that one should have bought the more expensive tickets in the first place?

Some more info:
Four of us - 2 Adults and 2 kids. Beach Resort. We typically travel light.

you will get stung more for luggage at the airport, prebook or spend the extra on an airline that does have luggage included



looking at airfares qantas and sing aren't much more expensive than pukestar and airasia although i would have no issues going airasia

The flights that are no luggage allow you to take hand luggage. 7kgs per person in a bag up to a certain size (check size with the airline)
That may be enough if you travel very light.
You can then buy one bag of up to 23kgs of luggage that goes in the hold for about $40
You can buy the hold luggage during the purchase of the ticket, it is an option you check
Or you can update your booking and add it then
Do Not leave it until you get to the Airport you will pay more.
Get maybe a bag for both you and your wife that should be plenty for the Family

Have a look at the season you're going - your bargain might be because it's off season (ie wet).
That's ok, Thailand's still fun and still warm even if rainy.

If it was just adults I'd say go carry-on only if you're not trying to take sports gear.

There's really nothing you need for thailand that you can't buy there cheap. Wear your shoes, your 1 long pants and 1 jumper on the plane and you only really need undies and boardies and a few tees in the bag.

Kids complicate that obviously but if they're old enough then same goes.

On the other hand, some people like to buy a cheap suitcase there and fill it with clothes etc (@ $6 - 10 per item).
I would say thought that this hard to do if you're over 6 foot or the wife is anything over 'petite'.

If you're gonna book luggage then as dusta says do it up front or you'll regret it

Also if Airasia be careful around transfers, we had a major stress one time had a 3 hr transfer window (sounds like heaps right?) but the airasia terminal (in malasia maybe?) was like 5kms from main terminal and you had to go thru customs to get there! grrrr... run run push push made it just..

More to the point though Dusta, I'm looking at Air Asia (for instance).
They have 2 fares. The only difference which is important to me is the baggage allowance, other differences can be accepted.




My two kids for sure do not need 20kg baggage allowance each, and 20kg is probably enough for the whole family once the hand luggage has been taken into account.

look on line, you cab buy some sort of jacket tha is in fact a small suit case, it is amazing what you can stuff in the multi pockets, should be right ????

If you fly Air Asia you can still buy the discounted checked baggage online after you pay for your flights. I'm not sure what the cut off is but I normally don't buy a checked baggage allowance until the night before i fly.

All of Air Asia domestic and international flights are through the same terminal, the new KLIA2 (and were also the same at the old LCCT), it's only an issue if you change airlines during your transfer. Though they are still working out their procedures for transfers at KLIA2, sometimes you have to exit and come back in through immigration and customs (pain in the arse), sometimes they have their **** together and use the transfer desk out on the piers.

if you fly Air Asia through KLIA2- it's massive and can be a bloody long walk around the terminal, wear comfy shoes. I actually like the old LCCT for its simplicity, though I was probably the only one.
