I live in Kalgoorlie/Boulder. I dont have an air conditioner or heater. If it gets really hot(40+) I'll turn on the misting sprayer under the shade cloth lean to I built and lay down in my hammock neckid.
The best way of cooling my abode is to cover the windows with shade cloth awnings( I hang em from the eaves/gutters) along the west side of said abode. Dont fix em down, let them flutter in any breeze that comes to cool em off. I found a white-ish carbon-in-pulp screen at the tip a few years ago, about 20mtrs x 5mtrs and made an awning/veranda roof from it over the concrete slab. Slab stays cool for walking on. Then grew Carob tree in front of front door.
That being said "TOUGHEN UP BUTTERCUP!"

Go to a 24/7 shopping mall and spend 5 days there, plenty of supplies of food & drinks, comfy seating, cinemas etc............ and it is still cheaper than buying A/C systems for da house.
You can get cheap reverse cycle portable unit starting at $ 400-00 just big enough to service a room and move it around the house with you.
Go to the beach.

dry kalgoorlie heat needs evaporative AC . hot at work today . we have a foil/foam insulation slab on the windscreen of the work van and it got to 56 on friday. , when the 2 stroke gear wont start its time to knock off. at home is lovely indoors as long as you open some windows . refridgerated is a bit useless.they tnd to cut out at 39-40 degrees. big problem with the a/c is having to sleep under a doona all year round.

Quality design and insulation, seriously we have a crank up the ac attitude , some stonking hot days here recently and I've not touched the ac which I don't have,
Big cavity insulation, roof, veridian glass and eaves of 2 to 4 mtrs , correct positioning and good natural captive airflow, concrete floors and tiled/ concrete walls

Long term problem with foil is that is can stain the window with residue that doesn't come off, especially if you use the wet method to get it to stick to the glass. Not a good idea if you're in a rental, it can get expensive replacing the glass.

I was chatting to a retiree today who escaped the heat by heading to the court house and sitting in the gallery for a murder trial. Cheaper and possibly more entertaining than a movie
