If it helps you any in your attempt to quit, a few months ago I started feeling a bit of tightness in my chest, so I thought I would get it checked out. I went to the GP, who at the mention of chest pain referred me to a chest pain clinic, which surprisingly cost me nothing. Way to go Medicare!
When they interview you and ask for background, if you are a non smoker and have no family history of heart attack, they almost concede that a problem is unlikely. Obviously there are other risk factors, but I think the smoking one is a serious one, and you can tell by their language that it is very significant.
Its very sobering lying there on a bed, and hearing the heart problems of the people around you, and in my case, realising that they were not that different in age to me. People having stents fitted when they were my age. Sometimes you get unlucky with the genetics, but smoking just makes it worse.
I was lucky, as they threw me on the treadmill and the results were fine, so they seem to think there is minimal chance of a problem. I felt like a bit of a fraud as everything checked out fine and they still treat it very seriously. I would recommend that if you think you are at risk, take the time and get one of these done. It might set your mind at rest or it might highlight a problem that you have time to fix. For a lot of people its free, so you may as well do it.
