Why do so many people still use inkjets when laser is so much cheaper?
Why not both. I have Brother laserprinters and Brother Inkjets. Laser for most things and the inkjets for colour. The Brother printers seem to be fine with refilled cartridges and I have both refilled them myself or swapped them at the local inkjet cartridge store.
The cheaper printers are junk though. I have a HP which I think cost all of $49. Cheaper than the replacement ink cartridge and it needs one for all the colours, whereas the Brother inkjets use a separate tank for each colour and black.
To answer Mark's question, you can override the driver that is automatically detected and tell the PC to get one from elsewhere, and then you direct it to where the local driver is already stored, or the one you downloaded. By default it will try and use the latest one but this will avoid that.
These sorts of things are why some people still pay for PC support and/or buy business grade equipment where its more likely that drivers are better tested ;-)
