What kind of information are you chasing? Info about fifo or oil and gas specifically?

I don't know much about the oil and gas industries, but I do know a lot about FIFO because I have intimate knowledge on the mining industry.

From what I gathered, the monetary reward is great, but there are lots of sacrifices you have to make. For a start, your social life is shot as your friends no longer know where and when you are in or out. Worse still, if you have a family or relationship, FIFO can be a nut breaker. I know of serious marital issues in the FIFO community. Even an OHS consultant from BHP-Billiton mentioned the fact that divorce rate is well up in the FIFO workforce.

The financial inducement is definitely there, but at the expense of your personal life. So I advice proceed with cautions !

There's barely any work for experienced guys so unless you've got a solid offer you're 10 years too late for that train..

There's still work out there. Lot of guys who were put off are starting to get picked up again. Not all doom and gloom but the glory days have definitely gone.

Have you surfed that wave on Barrow? I know its hard to get to if you are working on the island, due to quarantine issues.

Well said Jupiter. I wouldn't advice any one I like to do FIFO. Moneys great, but not much chop when the wife leaves you and you lose contact with your mates. Only do it if you have an escape plan and stick to it. The last time I did, it it enabled me to buy a yacht and sail parts of the south pacific. Some people just end up debt.

if your young & single its a good way to get some $$ together , You need a strong marriage to survive fifo ...the stats for relationships breaking are shocking this is why there is a push to use drive in out where practical.
Also you need a strong savings ethic as its easy to buy jet skies boats latest Ford ltd etc .& no drugs as tested weeky on some projects
It gets to you after a few years of 4/1 or 3/1 never had shorter swings in the 80s it was 5/1 when Woodside kicked off .
Take home pay is between 1900/3000 or close per week (60) hrs depending on EBA ...not all projects are the same UGL has a Gig at Woodside which is poor pay as its classed as maintenance ..where as Darwin LNG is 2nd best after Barrow .
The good paying jobs are getting harder to get as the current GOV is anti worker And driving down labour costs y using 457s & ABN plus the return of the ABCC. You need a strong union in Construction as its easy to get exploited .
Whilst it is financially rewarding you must be aware on construction that there will be long periods of no work unless you have good contacts most starts are from who you know . You are trading your lifestyle for $$$ ...!Maintenance is different & generally not as well payed as construction plus working on live plant is hazardous with fire being the main risk .
If you could get a start on offshore rigs & barges then you are pretty well looked after and well payed .
You need an exit strategy as you get older as its pretty hard to handle PILbra Darwin heat once you get towards 50 unless you are a crane driver ...also its harder to get employment once over 50 ...!

No I havn't mate. I've been up there for a couple of years now and never had the opportunity. We are pretty restricted to be honest but have only heard good things. I have scored a place on a wildlife tour this next swing so hope to check it all out.

There are a lot of myths surrounding the whole FIFO thing. Definitely don't believe everything you hear.
There is still plenty of work out there, and if you are good at what you do in your career you shouldn't have an issue finding work, what ever your field is.

Biggest mistake some people make working FIFO is they don't have goals or a plan. Plan your work then work your plan. Unless you get a good roster its not a good thing for an extended length of time. Money means nothing if you don't have people in your life who love you to enjoy it with. Maintaining close contact with those you care about is a key factor that gets over looked easily.

Baz above has hit the nails on the heads. Construction for a quick buck or maintenance for the lifestyle.
