I am no geek. Far from it actually.
A mate convinced me to go mac and I did. After years of what I thought was obligatory computer ownership hassle; ie scanning for malware, on my windows pc, I'm still thrilled that I don't need to think about disinfecting. They say you should, "cos nuthins infallible", but I just don't need to.
And though my windoze was fairly high spec (I believe), the mac runs rings around it.
Everything works together: buy a new wireless mouse, it connects itself.
The mini movies I make take 20 minutes and look great!

I haven't tried android, but it must be amazing to be better than iphone. Or maybe I need to raise my expectations.

I am no computer expert. But I now think of windows as a whinging whining bi*ch. are you sure you want to do this? Are you really really sure you want to do this? Then when you say yes it says it can't do it anyway. The number of times I've pressed shut down and thought it was shutting down only to return next morning and the thing is still on saying do you want to exit this program before shutting down! Gets me so angry.

I bought a mac last month... I like it.

I don't see why you need the ipad though... and $1500 isn't going to get much mac lovin so maybe dedicate the full $2k to a Mac.

For me Mac is like an Android very customisable.
Windows PC is like an ipad.

It will take >3 weeks to adjust to the Mac, and the first week is like WTF is this sh!t... but a couple helper apps here and there + some "defaults write" and it's all good.

I made this decision a couple years ago. Same question. And then I was told I could run a fully functioning windows OS on a Mac if I wanted which answered my question.

Conversely, there is absolutely no reason that anyone would want to run MacOS in a VM on a Windows PC

all you need to do is ask yourself what are you going to do with the rig.
then go buy a 900$ asus laptop from msy and spend the rest of the money on something that matters.
if you really want a tower you get into bottle necking issues etc once you start dumping big $$ on it so its best to just copy one of the codename systems which will match a mainboard with a processor and a video card theyll call it the spider or mastadon or pterydactyl or whatever silly lizard beast name they got going now. its been ahwhile gave up the it game many years ago.
if you like money stay the hell away from macs if you like sanity stay hell away from linux if you like having a bit of a play around with stuff get a tower if you like freedom and simplicity grab a lappy. honestly nearly every computer these days is way to over powerd for the standard user. most anyone really will do is render there home videos maybe play a few games. just make sure you shop at a REAL computer store. MSY or Umart i can reccomend. MSY being best for countless years and it shows because they went from 1 store when i started useing them (was getting ram cheaper thru them at retail price then threw our wholesaler) now theyve got heaps.

That's... actually the most sensible advice I've seen. I'm assuming you mean that if you're so computer illiterate that you need to ask between 2 different OSes then you should go with the dumb-ass option - Mac.

I see this answer a lot. Why are Macs "dumb"? What, exactly, is dumbed down about them?
A couple of examples might illustrate your point better and help educate the inquisitive consumer.


...I mean Mac OS X gained UNIX 03 certification with the release of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). It is actually as Unix as it actually is possible to actually be. This means that everything a software engineer or system administrator uses in a Unix system is there in Mac OS X.

It is a POSIX compliant operating system that happens to use an XNU kernel, which can trace its roots to BSD. And that was released as an open-source project; Darwin. Being POSIX compliant lets software packages written for Linux or BSD be ported to Mac OS X. Yay.

The whole "dumbed down for the masses" is only skin deep. And it's a very, very nice skin I might add. Beautiful even.

I don't think it is much easier to use than Windows, just a little nicer. For most users in the populace I mean. Mums and Dads. It's certainly cheaper. Mavericks is $0 and comes with most of what you'll need. Except Office.

Hate Mavericks. It ****ed Safari and the YouTube adblockers, audio system now needs command line rebooting, back/forwards swipes lock the browser tab, the smart URL box thing never remember the most used URLs... the list goes on.

It might be dumb only skin-deep, but that's all that matters to the iPhone generation aka 99.9% of people.
