I started seeing black spots all around in my right eye , tried flyspray to get rid of them oh wellk unfortunatly the hospital booked the RFDS to fly me down to Perth ( the flyspray didn't get rid of them), wasn't priority so went down on a comercial flight next day . upon arrival at Charlies , after a quick look by the doc , surgery was booked for later that night.
the ( aparently) detatched retina was lasered back in situ.
The eye was filled with silicon oil to keep the retina in place . Had to lay face down for 3 days, , then a week after the op I'm back home.
Then in 6 weeks later, more surgery to remove the oil , filled with gas, a week face down and it should be good, i hope.
Question is , has anyone gone through this before? , and if so how succesful was it?
Can't surf , swim or get salt water in ,so life just got really sh.tty
Can I look forward to resonably good vision ?
Doc 's only advice was as above and I'll see you in 6 weeks.

This is a serious injury. Do exactly what your specialist says. Do not short cut the treatment. You won't know the result until you have completed it. Do everything you can to allow it to be successful.

The macular was still attatched , just, he said, staying face down is so hard ,especially when the back isn't that good!
have only spoken to 2 others who have gone through this , one happy with the end results the other had a few continuing issues.
Pretty daunting prospect to possibly lose sight in one eye, so it's a carefull recovery process. I have no idea why it happened, no trauma of any kind.
As for the hospital here , Doc was spot on with his prognosis, and did all in his power to get me to Perth.
As for things hapenning out of the blue wouldn't wish this on anyone .

Through to some unlucky genetics, I have been through this 4 retina detachments (starting at the age off 11 ish throug to 22, havent had one since, touching wood)

Basically expect to lose some eyesight compared to what you had prviously. Hopefully it will just be minor loss.

Just do what the doctors say and all should be okay, the procedures they have now are amazing compared to what it used to be, I would be pretty confident it will be all good.

What surgeons can do and the dedication to there job is amazing (in my experience).

The part that sucks will be not going in water for an extended period (to prevent getting eye infections etc).

Blood pressure is 118/70 averaging around that, so has always been pretty good, misses tried poking me in the eye with her elbow , is that as good as a finger like Mark?
I just want to get back in the water , have had little swell before this , now it's comming up

The saga continues, have had a scleral buckle fitted about 5 weeks ago .
That remains in for life. That was so much fun .
The good news is the silicone oil has been removed and replaced with water ,still as sore as shyt, but vision is improving slowly.
Hopefully one more check up next week and that will be that.
Don't think I will get my hopes up yet for full return of vision, but any continuing improvement will do for now .
No surf for 6 months now ,that hurts .
As for the cost , no private health insurance, all covered because I went in emergency.

You need to really take it easy and follow medical instruction to gain full recovery
Any short cuts means you risk the full sight but if you are cool and take time then you should expect most of sight back GRADUALLY

At least you got prompt, cost effective treatment. Can be caused by numerous things, a few years back a guy (Chinese I think) detached his retinas from a long texting session in the dark.

Ive always found anything eyes other than you need glasses or having Fred Hollows look at you is sketchy at best in both diagnosis & treatment. As a kid I had years in & out of specialists trying to treat what in the end couldnt be treated (damaged optic nerve in one eye) until we gave up, at 15 I had to go through it all again as wanted to go into military & finally got an answer or what it was... no treatment yay

Last year I ran aground at 35 knots, only thing I didnt break was mast but it wasnt a painful crash. Started noticing a colour shift in eye I dont use, particular shade of green slowly became blue. Back onto the eye medicine merry go round, after many tests & many more tests of same thing I suffered bleed in retina, thankfully not the full upside down treatment, apparently they will just try laser... when they have not specified! Eventual "diagnosis"... it has no name, was about 6 months back. So now im on a something... not a list as our state government abolished waiting lists, so thankfully it doesnt appear to becoming worse whilst im on the waiting whatever but I pretty much shelved speed sailing, martial arts & anything high impact for the time being . Yeah I could give in to the system & go private but for what, "we'll give this a try treatment", thousands for them to experiment? The whole saga I find more than a little annoying since I'm lucky to see a doctor once a year & I know i'm going to go through those tests again & again, I really hate the dye.

So good luck, there was a windsurfer here who went through the whole upside down treatment last year & I think he has recovered ok. Keep us posted, be interesting how much vision returns. Losing eyesight or perception of losing can be a bit confronting, I know a few people that went fully or half blind & they didnt cope well. Sounds like your doctors are pretty on top of it though.

I fly down for the next check up on monday so wil know more about whats next for me .
On the up side I have gone through most of the wiring on my boat , monitered diligently my home brew (stock is building up nicely) though have'nt had much to drink lately.
When it's all over , whenever that may be ,will be having a Blind party , no one leaves till their blind

Scary experience mate. It happened to me in the early 80s, I was driving my car and the sight in the top part of my right eye just disappeared. Put it down to being struck in the eye with a tennis ball year's earlier.
I was in the army at the time and after being discharged from the civilian hospital with strict instructions to avoid any rough movements I was transferred in an army landrover and had a vitreous haemorrhage. So back to hospital.
Follow the surgeon's advice and take it easy for as long as it takes.
33 year's later my right eye is slightly blurry but I can still pass an eye sight test.

Just been checked, and ffs the doc (great bloke ) said we wer'nt expecting this kind of result .
So everything looks good , allowed back in the water, and back to work yeeeeeehaaaaa
