Makes Marcia that hit us in Yeppoon two years ago look like a sunday seabreeze. Hamilton Island has effectively had 200km+ gusts from 7.00 am till 2pm with peak gust of 263km/h / 142kn around 10.30. That intensity and duration is hard to fathom.

Cobra,
I assume you were here too during Marcia? Marcia was a cat 5 when it made landfall some 60km north of us but thankfully for the Byfield ranges / Shoalwater bay (relatively uninhabited) the cyclone's strength dissipated pretty quickly and at best it was only Cat 3 when it came through town. It was quite fast moving so the duration was no where near as long as what they've just experienced north of us. From memory our peak wind speed recorded was around 95kn (175km/h). Yes I agree it was hairy and there was extensive damage but I don't think it was on par with Debbie.

Sausage
who knows what wind speeds byfield got, never recorded.
All I know byfield had a cat 4 byfield forestry lost 80% of its timber with half a million ton of timber recovered.
as you know sausage byfield is located 40ks nth of Yeppoon with a population and small school .
Anyhow bet they didn't compair it to a summer breeze.

I wonder how there are build ... if there is any upper limit on the scale? I doubt there are going supersonic...Most of those cheap Chinese knock off completely unsuitable for our Aussie condition...
most finish near mere 120 km/ h.. just breeze meters instead of serious stuff like Debbie
60 mph/h ??

120 km/h

That one looks expensive and serious.Until you convert m/s to usual units - 162 km /h max. waste of money

That one looks good for me

I am afraid that you could lose you expensive smartphone before you finish measuring Debbie

of finish with palm tree impaled in your eye ( just flying by in our conditions)

weather from the local harbour on willy weather.
LIVE readout righthand side shows WSW wind at 9.3km hahaha been ESE all day.
thats what happens when your weather station is stuck behind a land mass/headland
most times its 10-15 knts less and wrong direction.
but hey if willy weather say 9km winds dont argue

drying hair in the breeze?Instead of buying expensive express dryer from Bunnings , she can have the same effect by sticking her head outside window. Debbie give you for free what the best blower could offer

Hamilton Island Marina this morning....
About 9 boats completely broke from the dock three even made it out of the marina and washed up on Dent Island ( opposite ) could easily have been a few others that made it out and washed up elsewhere.

I got some good videos of the Cyclone in full effect and will upload when I can get a better data connection.

A lot of damage on the island many many trees down roofing materials everywhere and few places lost their roof completely
i have not heard of any injurys or loss of life which is a great result for what went through here.

It's awesome hey snags. We would have needed very small sails/kites earlier this morning in Yeppoon.

Some Vids of Debbie from our accomodation... When I left the boat in the Marina I had just one objective .... Concrete accommodation

As Debbie approached

note the amount of vegetation

Tuesday morning ( wind had been blowing since late Monday afternoon )

The Relative Calm of the Eye

after the Eye ( wind in different direction )

different view ( out the front door )

Keep in mind the above videos are on the leeward side of our building... It was waay to dangerous to film from the windward side.
In summary wind started Monday afternoon by about 4:30pm I personally deemed it too dangerous to be outside...( walking around ) As debris was already starting to move.. By midnight the jet like sounds had begun almost impossible to sleep due to the noise and crashing of stuff into the side of our apartment.
the wind blew all night all day Tuesday the eye passed around 12pm then we started the second half of the cyclone with the wind from the opposite direction.

The screaming sound was incredible ...only broken up by the crashing sound of corrugated roofing sheets smashing into things.

Its appear that congressman was right anyhow and here is a prove.Windsurfers arriving at the national event in Burrum exhausted whole Debbie cyclone resources. Debbi didn't last once reached the windsurfing camp.
Next time we could use even bigger sails to quiet cyclone more efficiently.
Kiters welcome too. We should make next camp at Hamilton Island and wait for next cyclone to come.
We also could send surfers to exhaust incoming tsunami waves if needed.
