Simple 5 percent tax on land (including the big swathes of land they own). Would take away the capitulated rent going into the price hence stop speculation and the boom bust cycle. Would also stop large corporations keeping vacant land and property which ultimately reduces supply. Money goes into a sovereign fund and every citizen shares a dividend. Norway does it with their oil, Singapore with their land. This would mean all citizens share in the wealth of the land and would make sure land owners improve their land to make it useful to earn income. Would eliminate most other taxes as well most of the government.

Why should someone on the average wage who saves hard and buys a cheap country town house to live in have to pay $15000 in land tax alone, whereas someone who earns more can buy a nice BMW and not pay as much tax?

To earn the average wage as a farmer, apparently you need land worth about $1 million. Where would someone earning an average income find $50,000 to pay tax, and what will the consumer think when they see the price hike on the food they eat?

If you have to improve land to earn income, then you tear down the native bush; squash the koalas and echidna under bulldozers; throw lots of fertilizer around, and generally stuff up the environment. Is that really a good thing?

Why will a land tax eliminate most of the government? Are you going to stop paying unemployment benefits, running hospitals,and having defence forces, teachers, police and health inspectors?

Also, people ALREADY pay tax on a lot of land, at least in NSW, often at 2%. Why will lifting that by 3% and widening the take change things as you claim?

how about a GST tax on exports , so that China buys $ an ounce of gold at $2800 plus gst , all export industry is gst exempt .

Ah yes you've bought the elites argument hook line and sinker. Singapore do it, have one of the lowest income and business tax rates in the world and are fast becoming the richest nation per capita. Tax away the unearned income and you destroy the boom and crash cyclic economy. Did you know Canberra's was founded on this idea, our early leaders new about price speculation and it's disastrous effects.

But there's too much money to be made in land/ property and other government granted licenses ... the biggest one being private property rights and of course even better if there are minerals/oil there as well. Try and open your own bank and see how you go.


Anyhow read Phil Anderson's work the secret life of real estate and banking (to start with there's other economists over the last 200 years who have understood what's really going on as well - but you wouldnt have heard of them obviously). He studied every economic cycle in the US since the early 1800s and found some very interesting things.

I really can't be bothered explaining. Or just keep seeing the world from the perspective they want us to see. I challenge you to be better or just keep dribbling absolute bar stool news media outlet garbage. Or worse, the nonsense they teach and call economics now.

Wow, what a completely dud response. Personal abuse, vague hand-waving rubbish, and no response at all to the fact that your supposed big deal is just going to slightly increase land tax that many already pay.

So I did a quick check on Anderson, and can see no reason to see why he is one of those "who have understood what's really going on". He seems to have no special credentials, no great success; he seems to just sell seminars. Many other people have studied cycles, by the way.

So basically, I have provided actual numbers and you have responded with vague, poorly written insults. There was some reference to you being a teacher. If so, I really hope that you do not try to teach anyone how to spell and punctuate.

You have not, by the way, said why spending (say) $80k on a property to run a business is apparently "unearned income" whereas buying a BMW can be a business expense. And why should a small farmer working like a dog have to pay tax whereas someone who invests the same cash in a car wash as a silent partner not pay tax on similar profit?

Even though they are rich, the riches they have is nothing compared to the State. The State has a system set up to take billions of dollars from the community every week without protest. It's a very good system. Just like the dairy farmer taking milk from cows.

Back in the day some gold miners put up a stockade to fight State oppression. They are celebrated as heroes, especially lefties celebrate those fighting against unjust taxes. Today those who celebrate the Eureka Stockade, protesting under the southern cross, are the first to demand the State to take income and assets from individuals.

I do not know of much public philanthropy or similar profile done by GinaR
But painting Twiggy with a 100% negative brush overlooks his philanthropy and philisophical approach to those around him.
Yes they are both rich yes they both take advantage of the very liberal approach to apportioning payment for the minerals and nature's gifts which are readily found here.

The core of the issue is making a comparison of the benefits to the national balance sheet if all these industries where nationalised versus what has happened to date and finding a far more equitable balance IMO. Mineral extraction has never been rocket science. As No1 one coal exporter and No 2 gas exporter in the world we should not be quibbling about a $20 billion surplus or not - (that is what is pathetic here) - that amount should be the sports grants rorts issue = a none issue as that amount of jam funds a lot of dunnies/rooms and playing surfaces..

The point of note
"No1 one coal exporter and No 2 gas exporter" is and will continue as a ball and chain to our future. NZ's economy has managed without this wealth and for 6 million people are obviously doing something right if the exchange rate is any measure this has been fairly stable against ours for some time now..
Attracting investment funds as an excuse looks a bit shallow when you look at how COVID = a small blob of genetics with a lipid membrane = a fat sack without a butt has liberated funds.
Perhaps our pollies answer to more than one employer - based on where they think their re-election purse comes from???

And for what its worth I would have trouble living under a Chinese regime as a youth - less so as a older fart, but we all owe more than one generation of chinese a debit for coping a lousey polluted environment to provide us with the goods we love to own at a great price.
