Hi so I have an old hilux and want to pimp it out a little. Thinking the interior needs a little love and am wanting to know if anybody has tried bolting in different seats? Mine are looking pretty frayed, covered in surf wax etc.
Im hoping to pick up a nice set of leather seats out of a wrecked prado or something and just wondering if the bolt pattern would be the same?
Also, what would be the chances of an auto electrician being able to hook up the electrics if I managed to score some modern seats?

Just make sure to keep your old ones I've a mate with a troopy with bucket seats in it and it was a night mate to put over the pits . How old is your hilux does it have air bags ?? I've a mate also that runs xr6 seats in his hiace van they are comfy as. With time and patience you can make anything fit lol

there must be dedicated Hilux or Toyota forums out there where you should get better info. Just saying everyone here owns different vehicles and therefore generalise in their opinions, but dedicated forums will give a lot more clear info.

Yeah, but the people on seabreeze are far smarter than people on other forums - didnt you know that?

1.- Get the seats reupholstered.
2.- Cover all interior plastics with leather; takes a while but makes it look good. You just need to remove them, cover w/ glue, stretch leather over, reassemble... it will reduce rattles but you can also insert some sound deadening.

My uncle and I did this on a G Wagon, and the results were spectacular.

4 months of evening work.
~$3k for the seats.
~$800 for the rest.

In 2007 I got a quote to do the seats of my Subaru Outback, and they wanted $5k but the side airbags had to be disabled.

I had new seats put in my troopy (was 11 seater - cant put baby seats in...).

2 single Recaro copies and a 3 seat bench (www.techsafeseating.com.au/van-seating/safetyexcel) . All done by wesbarvanquip.com.au so legit roadworthy etc. (I still have all the original seats, so I can add the original 2 rearmost seats to add another 4 seats if required.)

They used the original seat slides but did a cut & shut to get some extra room when slid forward and mounted slightly further outwards.

Was $5k all up from memory (was nearly 10 years ago)


I also did similar to Fly in that I removed all the internal panels and copied them onto thin Masonite and added carpet. Cut in some doors to put a compressor in the panel space and create some storage.


Its all doable... just time and $.

Hilux Surf seats are way more comfy, have all the lumbar adjustments and bolt straight in. Some surfs even came with recaros from factory.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I think I'll look for a wrecked hilux and steal the seats, I dont think I have the drive to do all the other snazzy stuff!

Keep the old ones get covers beaded ones like the taxi drivers do and go sailing.

Really only need to know that electric motors usually have what is known as a "motor controller" that attempts to keep the motor operating the same speed and that the usual rating for an electric motor (e.g. for seats) will use something like 3 times the motors wattage or Amperes rating stamped on it.
