they have now - but their toys were taken off them for something like 19 years for being silly little duckheads.

and........my apologies, it wasn't Perth, it was the Sheraton in Melbourne, and the unknowing "defector" being rescued was the Dean of a University who was in town for a conference.

personally, I wouldn't call it brave..........

yep- they snuck into the hotel, smashed down the door [fire rated hotel doors are pretty pricey] wrecking the door, it's frame, and stuffing the surrounding wall.
"rescued" the occupants who were supposed to be abducted diplomats [or something like that]
Nearby room occupants rang reception to report the noise, manager went up to have a look -and got shoved back in the lift by an unidentified hooded bloke with a submachinegun.
Manager called the police - they arrived as the ASIS team were leaving, and a gunfight almost occurred, and back then the Victorian police were pretty fond of throwing lead around.

IIRC, Asis had gone to the wrong building / wrong floor / wrong room - the one the were supposed to visit had a floor about to be closed off for refurbishment, and the approval of the owners to do damage.

needless to say - it was a bit too hard to sweep under the carpet.

We knew of this about an hour after it happened, through the Australian hotel industries "skip-chain", a communication system the industry used at the time to warn other hotels of people to deny access, for non payment or damage etc.

At the time, I worked at the Orchard hotel in Perth, and it was pretty regularly that we would have state police, federals, SAS and fire brigade blokes pay us a visit to be familiar with the layout, ventilation ducting system, back of house areas, engineering spaces and the like.

And yes - a few times when we were doing refurbs they would come and play.

mind you - with all our security crew being ex Aussie - Brit - Rhodesian SAS, with a couple of Warsaw pact specialists it never got boring!
