Hi all,

After freezing in yet another Tassie winter, I have had enough and will be traveling up to Noosa and back for a month long surfing camping, getting warm trip. will be February, 2016 only time i can get off. Will this be an OK time up that way for waves.

I will travel straight up the middle through Dubbo check out the zoo, then off to spend time at Noosa, Coolum and Stradbroke island. What is Bribie island like?

Just wondering which roads are the best to take through the middle of Australia this way. Then slowly make my way down the coast back to Melbourne.

I know its sacrilegious to tell of good surf breaks. but help on good camping grounds near surf would be a huge help. have a two wheeled drive Vito camper van. will be taking a SUP for exploring and small surf days and a 7 foot 6 short long board X.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

near noosa, if you want an awesome view and free camping, go for a drive up to mt wolvi.
noosa busy. there are probably some better less populated areas with caravan parks right on the beach next to surf breaks nearby noosa, without actually doing noosa itself. (pacific paradise caravan park comes to mind)
in NSW there is a great council run caravan park where you acn lay in your tent on the point and watch the break peal past - bonny hills. near port maquarie.
i dont live near any of these areas but they are places ive been.
a day trip to fraser island on a 4wd bus is a good thing.

Yes I'm only going to Noosa as girlfriend never been there. But waves are great and may stay in that area for two weeks, Last time I went there. I got a $80.00 parking fine because i surfed for more than two hours. haha ...they even followed fine up all the way back to Tassie!!

I looking for just what you described. I am after small little towns, you guys on the mainland are lucky, thanks for your reply myusernam.

I actually scored quite a few nice waves at Peregian beach when I lived up those ways, hardly ever anybody else out too, everybody was up at the points or down at Coolum. Definitely nicer peelers at the other main spots, but damn crowded!

Hopefully we should be into cyclone season..........doesn't matter you'll get waves somewhere. The weather will be warm. You could spend a couple of nights on the northshore at the camp grounds and go paddling on the river mouth.

Theres no caravan park at Pacific Paradise......and that area is a sh!thole. I think he's talking about Mudjimba caravan park which is quite good. Cottontree caravan park is also worth a look as its got the river on one side and the beach on the other.

In terms of parking / crashing out in Noosa you can park in the National Park all day for free and then park outside when the ranger chases you out at about 7pm at night.

Over at Sunshine theres a carpark known as hippies which is on the esplanade south of Arakoon Crescent, you'll get away with a few days there....

Noosa in Jan / Feb is very busy but if you find some local crew they will give you the heads up....

And Mt Wolvi is definately worth the venture

Best/Quickest way from Melbourne would to take the Hume to Coolac - past Gundagai then head across to Dubbo from there. The other back road options would be a lot longer. longer.

Bear in mind that Dubbo in Feb will be stinking hot and its a sh!thole. Id rather go to Taronga anyday as Id expect the animals to be very dormant in the heat.

Sent you an email re some decent spots if you decide to take the Coast road up or back.

I have to drop into my mates at beech worth I think then i will go up to Coolac onto Sydney see the zoo there and up to noosa on the coast road. Was trying to miss Sydney. With two drivers could get to Sydney in a Day but 9 hours in a car could go around tassie!!! ha so might take two.

You could camp at Munna point in Noosa, gets pretty packed and you would have to book well ahead.
But, the mouth is a quick SUP away, you have pretty much everything you need around you.
Straddie you can camp at cylinder beach, or you can camp around on one of the quieter beaches if you are sneaky.

If you're going to Beechworth, just go straight up the Hume Hwy to Sydney. Its about 5hrs from Albury I reckon.

Go via Dubbo ... sort of halfway between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Went for a wedding there in summer. It is hot. Went to the zoo also. That was very hot.

Would recommend an overnight stay and head off a crack of dawn next day. Sorry to the Dubboites. Inland NSW is hot in summer. Not like inland WA off course.

Ah Northern NSW in February ..... cyclone swells. mango season, less crowds with the kids back at school. Should be great fun. Let your wanderlust guide you.

And then there is southern NSW in February - some very good times in Malua Bay. Even less people and still good surf locations.

Well, this little Taswegian is frothing (i never say that)

Have talked to girlfriend and after some searching and great advice from you guys, We are going to head up the Pacific highway take about 5 to 6 or even more!!! days to get to Noosa . Sorry Dubbo and Beechworth next time!!!...Will try and find all the good spots on way up... stay at Coolum for a bit, then head back to all the spots we missed. God you guys and girls are so lucky. South NSW sounds Awesome.

I wouldn't pin too much on Noosa itself - too busy, too expensive, too fancy, too touristy.
Coolum much more laid back. Check the points heading south, Pt Arkwright, Pt Cartwright, etc.
Cotton tree (maroochydore) great camp ground, right on the point. There's a great wave for less advanced SUP-ers (like me) that rolls into the river.
Have a look at dicky beach camp site and moffats has a nice point and a reef you can paddle out to if you're game.
