Hey All,

Need some advice on buying some Art, not something I do everyday. I really like the Bush yam leaves style especially the works from Gloria Petyarre however those works in particular are getting very expensive. If anyone can recommend a gallery, Artist and basically the do's and don'ts of buying art I'm all ears. TIA

So much of the modern artists' traits may be seen in other areas such as politics, policy, societal norms (social engineering) and it is a shame those idiots wield such power.

Well why pay through the nose for something that has no cultural or historical basis. Print one from the net on A3. No cxnt will know the difference. Modern art is the ultimate emperors New clothes bullshxt.

So much art out there is rubbish or just a notch above home craft, but something for everyone I guess. Banksy pieces are worth a fortune, others think it's just graffiti.

There's a lot of mediocre aboriginal art out there, it's no different. But if your going to buy it maybe look at supporting a gallery in a small community like balgoart.org.au - there's heaps of small community galleries around the country and you might as well cut out the middle man mark ups.

go to Alice Springs and check out some galleries, and maybe go to some of the outstations.

Modern art only sucks if you have no context. As does any "classic" art, actually. There's nothing more boring than the Italian masters, to me anyway. Another ****ing religious scene? Really? People thought impressionism was rubbish when it first appeared too. People always think new things are rubbish.

Modern art has to break the rules, else we'd be painting ****ing cupids and fat ladies forever. Most of it is going to suck while it pushes into new territory, and will be forgotten.

It's like music; people say music thirty or forty years ago was so much better than now, but that's only because you are cherry-picking the best music from an entire decade or more. There was a lot of **** too; we've just (thankfully) forgotten it.

I've got an aboriginal piece, still not framed, and it looks really good. I like it. What more is there to it than that?

Well this is going to sound super dodgy but I actually have a Gloria Petyarre painting that I am selling. It is the larger brush stroke bush medicine leaf style, 149cm by 95.5cm (it has photos with the artist and certificate of authenticity). If you're interested, I can send you through some images.

Other than that, buying directly from any number of the community run galleries is the way to go. If you end up purchasing from a privately owned gallery make sure they are a signatory to the Australian Indigenous Art Code of Conduct.
