Anyone else, packed in the corporate sh!t for something different or become a hobo?

Firiebob

Funny bugger Snags, I'm a 5 star hobbo
I was in a different situation to Flanagaj, after being in a job for 28 years that I used to love, I started to absolutely hate it. So got the caravan, wife and I pulled the pin and F'd off. Been on road 14 months now and feel we could go on for years, not everyone's cup of tea but we are so happy and loving it

Love it! I could so easily blend into that existence. There is one small problem with that picture. Where's the mountain bike?

Under the cover in front of the van

You must be in heaven. I can just imagine how it feels waking up each morning feeling abstracted from the usual bullsh!t.

if you didnt have the wife and kids you wouldnt have a problem now would you flanagaj?

i understand your predicament very well, i was in a very similar situation after getting tired of the rat race i ditched it all to pursue my passions in life
it was great at first but then i some people were quite persistant in me finishing prior arangements. at first i tried to keep them at bay by doing the odd cash job labouring or bartending on weekend but in the end i found the ultimate solution to solve all solutions and opened up my own hitman service.

why dont you give us a call at 555 - no trouble - no strife

You can always make more money but you cannot make more time. Time is your only real currency. How you spend it determines the quality of your life.

Above all, do not underestimate the value of those you love and those that love you.

Best advice I've read all year!

Learnt that years ago from Cold Chisel's Bow River song

Listen now to the wind, babe
Listen now to the rain
Feel that water lickin' at my feet again
I don't wanna see this town no more
Wastin' my days on a factory floor
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again

Anytime you want babe, you can come around
But only six days separates me and the great Top End
I been working hard, twelve hours a day
And the money I saved won't buy my youth again
I'm goin' for the heat babe, and the tropical rain
In a place where no man's puttin' on the dog for me
I'm waitin' on the weekend, set o' brand new tyres
And back in Bow River's just where I want to be

Listen now to the wind, babe
Listen now to the rain
Feel that water lickin' at my feet again
I don't wanna see this town no more
Too many years made up my mind to go or stay
Right to my dying day
I don't wanna see another engine line
Too many years and I owe my mind
First set o' wheels headin' back Bow River again
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again

I got the motor runnin', I got the rest of my days
Sold everything I owned for just a song
So anytime you want babe, you can come around
But don't leave it too late, you just might find me gone

Listen now to the wind, babe
Listen now to the rain
Feel that water lickin' at my feet again
I don't wanna see this town no more
Too many years made up my mind to go or stay
Right to my dying day
I don't wanna see another engine line
Too many years and I owe my mind
First set o' wheels headin' back Bow River again

I don't need the score
I'm goin' through the door
Gonna tell the man I don't want no more
Pick up a fast car and burn my name in the road
One week, two week, maybe even more
Piss all my money up against the damn wall
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again

First thing you know I'll be
Back in Bow River
Again

I'm considering Ubering on a saturday night for some extra cash too.

..says the one who fueled 5 pages of TPP thread.. do I need more proof of lefty hypocrisy ?

OK well this dumb lefty can't see any connection.. except maybe in previous uber discussions you've made some generic pro-taxi/anti-uber comments... so by all means head over to the TPP thread and elaborate there if you want to discuss it with me, I'm all ears.

I'm in my mid 40's and have been a hobo now for 3 years. I spend half the year in Oz in my campervan and the other half in Indo. I look for waves in the morning and review the ASX in the arvo. This is the life for me now and I've worked hard to get here. Occasionally I'll do a house sit or pitch a tent to give van life a break. The lifestyle is cheap once you're set up.

I had a long term corporate job and could not imagine going back now.

If you want to do it, formulate a plan and go for it.

There are heaps of good travel blogs out there for inspiration.

.... I was known as someone who thought differently and was highly respected for that by my peers and employers. I did get paid well above the average salary in each company because my employers valued my strategic thinking and ability to work with a large range of professionals like structural engineers, builders and relate well to clients.
...

Well golly golly gosh!
That sounds like the makings of a "superior intellect" right there!
I was wondering where you were hiding,.. and there you are.

^^ Careful Pweedas, you might get some of that strategically different highly respected thought turned against you!

I trust you are up for it.

I got some of that strategically different highly respected thought PMed to me a couple of days ago.

It was so strategically different and highly respected that it mocked Tony Abbott.

Wow I thought, that's strategically different. PM'ing threads about Abbott not foruming them. I gave respect for the ability to work in a wide range of fields.

Perhaps it was empirical ?

Well now I'm offended then.
After the many 'less than complimentary' PMs containing some not very strategic thinking that were previously directed my way, not so much as a whisper was PM'd to me regarding the availability of the Mista rabbott tea towels.

I wonder if perhaps the new Carantoc avatar might have prompted an approach?

Empirical or not,.. after all the good work I put in, I just feel so totally neglected.
Not even a free tea towel! Even though he was paid well above the average salary.
That's gratitude for you! Grrrrr!!

After 17yrs as a programmer for a big bank you'd have that thing that gives you 0.001c of each transaction to your account right?

c'mon you all do it...

I must admit I've been tempted some times

Doing it is easy. Hell, the reconciliation reports are done by us too!

Missing $20m for 3 months: "Everything looks fine. Says so right there on the report. It's only out by the usual half a mil or so (true story)"

But where are you going to go to be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life? It's the opposite of what you really want to do when you think about it.
You'll end up unhappy, in prison, dead or worse.

Like it!! I am going to have to hold out for another 3 years until daughter has completed her state education and then it's the simple life. The wife too is up for it, so that's great.

Yeah I plan to never have a wife and kids - people say ohh you never know but at 31 yr old (engaged once) I do bloody well know, I definitely dont want a anchor and a tribe of snotty nose kids.
People who come out of a relationship and get all lonely straight away and need someone immediately make me sick.

I was mining on the big bucks & in Asia every 3rd week for 7 yrs but depressed as hell.
Now just operating machines on sub divisions on the Sunny Coast for peanuts - but Iam not depressed about where Iam headed.
Without a wife and kids & no thinking and joking ( drinking and smoking) I gets exactly wheres I wanna goes ( within reason).

I wouldn't change the past. Doesn't mean i wanna do this for ever ether. Iv done my time on the tools and aspired to be Management?. Well i can honestly say its not worth the stress! and responsibility. We are a normal family two kids 5 and 14 on one income so yeah most of the time things are tight, but I'd be depressed as hell not having the wife and kids around in a strange kind of way it makes it worth living lol. But the Wife has plans once the kids are gone! all in a bus and were off!

How can anyone really say they wouldn't change the past.
I bet if you had the opportunity there would be more than one decision you would be willing to change.

I walked away from a job that gave us $5000 a week income for a city job that pays $1100 a week. but im home to say good night to my kids and there to wake them up in the mornings. and that's more priceless than anything to me. but yeah I wouldn't change a thing. Id do it all again! just would have started Windsurfing and Kiting years earlier lol Im not rich im not anything I buy second hand gear and all that crap. I guess im just a Pleb lol

Well thats good mate you got it sorted and your happy now with your situation in life. Judging by the red thumbs there are people who lie to themselves they wouldn't change something from their past or they have lived a boring life.
