People do the trip in all manner of sized boats. Provided its not a tinny with a little 5hp, it's more about planning your travel times so as not to be out there when conditions are poor. Travelling to and from in the mornings and paying attention to forecasts so you don't get caught out.
a boat that size/power it'll be a relatively brief trip for the crossing if you fang it, so not like you're out there forever, and it's big enough to handle a bit of sea state if you got left drifting.
Do yourself a favour if ever the above scenario ever happens and send em back on the ferry
