Even though alcohol use by teenagers is down compared to our generation in Australia there are some good ideas here:

Great story.

Could your country learn from Iceland?

Could your family learn from Iceland?

At 1:08 "it became illegal for teenagers to be outside at night" is a totally insane way to get them to stay in.

And no mention of the GFC sending Iceland broke....no spare money means no partying.

Also, for 9 months of the year it's dark for longer than it's light & freezing.

Pretty sure that is SIX months...unless the world is not a ball after all...(or if Iceland is located in a hole?) .

Agree that is hard to police. I was more thinking of the family time and activity focus.

We've known this since the 70s: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_Park

That somewhat infamous "rat given an unlimited supply of drugs" experiment that saw the rat eventually dose itself to death was done with the lone rat in a cage with nothing else to do.

The same experiment done in a cage with other rats, toys and the like saw completely different results.

It's the environment.

Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage.

There have been lots of interesting experiments with mice and rats in the past, social type experiments. I watched a utube video on one once where mice were provided with what was effectively a mouse paradise. There was ample food, water, activities for them, space and what was considered to be an interesting environment for them.

Within a year the mice were all dead. They died out due to completely crazy behaviour and social systems that lead to their demise.

Very philosophical!
But how about this, the same boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg...it's what your made of, not the environment.

It's not totally the environment but it's a large part of it. Listen to Sam Harris' podcast #149, he and Sally Satei specifically talk about it.

at least the Icelanders had the balls to lock up the bankers instead of "bailing them out"
