Hi Guys sorry to be a bore, but in regards to copyright you couldn’t be further from the truth.
Just because an image can be found on the internet does not mean that it is public domain.
Image copyright is alive and kicking and does and will give you a nasty slap in the face if you are discovered using someone’s image for commercial purposes. Watermarks can be removed through cropping the image, or even through patient editing out.
You can lock an image so that it can’t be dragged off the browser and onto your desktop, but that just stops the lazy. A simple screen shot will give you the same result. If an image has been all over the web “congrats to the photographer” it means that either social media is working for him or his pockets are lined with gold via licensing agreements with of the image with commercial enterprise.
There will be many exceptions to the rule, as we all love to share images and generally we are not fussed how far it goes, forums etc.
But if the photographer earns a living from their images, unless you have the consent of a photographer, copying an image from the net for commercial gain via any form of media advertising (including social media) can and does become a costly mistake.
The notion that “Oh I thought it was just a cool image to display on my website” (say, surf shop), isn’t an excuse that holds up in court.
Ps
@Wavekiter The surfers name is Daniel Jones and the image was posted to the India Surf Tours FB
www.facebook.com/IndiaSurfTours page in November 22 2012 and considering the only photographer tagged in the image is a fella called Dustin Elison, I would probably send him a facebook PM via his FB page at
www.facebook.com/dustin.t.ellison His page is still active as he last posted to it on May 13.
I hope this helps you with your needs. Cheers!
