Every now and then I get these really annoying "gamifive" pop ups on my mobile phone. I had it just a moment ago while looking at ads on gumtree. It doesn't just happen on gumtree . Hitting the back button doesn't get rid of it and I haven't selected or clicked on it. Anyone else experienced this ?

You just realised that your phone is nothing more than an advertising medium and data recorder, for telcos and other corporations to know how to target their products and services?!

Did you just sell a Nokia phone or something ancient?

Ads are trackers. No matter what you do your device has a unique signature.

Me personally; care factor 0. Jokes on them because I'm not even real.

Be careful because the bastards may charge you for a subscription fee even if you did not signed up to it...... it is a popular SMS scam, Happened to me...... complained and they refunded the "fee" Be sure you get your provider to block premium SMS on your mobile!

Yeah swapped phones with the missus, get my phone back and now has nonstop pop ups, went through the menus and Google settings but they won't frock off

Will reset the phone if I can't fix it.

Android or apple?

If apple you're SOL because I don't know anything about them.

If Android, you can root then adblock with a few hours reading (can be skipped if you're gung-ho) followed by a 3 minute process.

You can adblock without root but to my understanding it just hides ads but still loads them in background.

Rooted adblockers use a list of sites that your phone won't connect to under any circumstances. The lists are regularly updated.

I use Adaway, it's free and works great.

Once you have root access you can download the apk file (google adaway apk) directly to your phone and run it to install, or you can install f-droid from play store and then use it just the same as the play store, and get adaway.

The reason for this rigmarole is that google won't host ad blockers on play store, they removed them all a few years back.

Pretty much the *only* advertising I see on my phone is hard coded into games. Although the odd ad sneaks through I guess.

The only downside is some games have "watch videos to get free coins/gems/etc" and it often won't work.

The upside is that many apps have a 'pay to remove ads' feature and I'm already not getting any. Having said that if I find it useful I'll spend the $2 and buy it anyway to support the devs.

Some specific advice to solve your prob:

Try downloading airpush detector
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brosmike.airpushdetector&hl=en

and it might tell you which app is at fault.

Another approach would be to go into play store, look at my apps, look at last ones installed (you said it's a new problem).
Look for dodgy games, wallpapers, etc, if in doubt uninstall.


If all fails, try AVG for android, it will flag dodgy apps I believe.
