have a fair bit on the Patrol but it's the little things that make the difference.................Cheers,
Big Dog..
Apologies for kinda going off on a tangent here,
Loaded question for you,
Does your Patrol happen to have a ZD30 lurking under the bonnet?
Recently I had the doubtful honour of ripping my Dads beloved 2004 patrol to bits after the engine lived up to it's "grenade" nickname.
1 of the 2 Inlet manifold runners had choked up with carbon - thanks to the EGR system.
result - 2 pots running too hot, 2 pots running too cold - ending up with holed pistons and several cracks in the head.
There are a few inherent "issues" with these engines -
- EGR system clogs 1 of the inlet manifold runners, leading to too rich/too lean mixtures. [block EGR with blanking plate]
- Variable vane turbo is great stuff - but poorly controlled, often giving too high / too low boost. [fit "Dawes" valve to set minimum and maximum boost levels]
- PCV system dumps oily contamination on the MAF sensor, giving false air density readings to the engine management computer. [fit oil separator to the PCV system]
- The decorative cover that sits over the engine vibrates against the intercooler - causing it to leak. [remove the cover - it is only cosmetic]
These engines really like [need] a bigger capacity intercooler and free flowing exhaust - most aftermarket exhausts I have seen, seem to be 3" diameter.
I can personally recommend that taking the head off is not a job for the average backyard tinkerer - save your sanity, back and knuckles
Get the professionals to rip out the whole motor and fix it on a work bench
Google "Nissan Anti Detonation System" [NADS] for a better detailed description than I can give.
