Summer in southern Europe it get's dark ~ 22:00hrs
In winter ~18:00hrs
East Coast USA is roughly the same as France, so ^^^.
UK which is close to the Artic, summer ~22:45, winter ~17:00hrs

Can somebody tell me why in the infinite wisdom of some gov department do we have to have 17:00 be dark in Sydney?
People get to work @ 08:30, and usually leave @ 18hrs, why is it dark at 17hrs????

So for a whole 4 months we can't do any outdoor activity during the week, then the **** will accuse us of being couch potatoes.

...and just as an aside, the UK gets dark by 3.30pm in mid-winter - at Australia's latitude we've got it good.

It's all about time zones.

Because Orstrayia is such a wide country,.. "the wide brown land for meeee,.." as the song goes, most states span a lot of longitude.

Since there is only one time zone for the whole state, they take a mid point somewhere in the state to base the time zone on, hence the places east of the centre point have early sunrises and early sunsets, and places west of the mid point have late sunrises and late sunsets.

Sydnoiy being a long way east of the mid point for NSW, therefore has early sunsets, so you get to go to bed early.

If you don't like it, feel free to move to Broken Hill and you can have late sunsets forever.

In WA we have the opposite effect of late sunrises and late sunsets as a matter of course because the mid point and thus the time zone base point, is taken as somewhere out near Kalgoorlie.
Which is why we're not too keen on daylight saving because that accentuates an already late sunset.

You need to look at the solar height as well
Below is Oslo at Midwinter sun gets 7 degrees above horizon
I lived there for 10 years and you would literally have to climb a mountain to see the sun in winter

If you compare like for like, you're not doing too bad.

That's an interesting solution and a gain for windsport lovers. It's definately achievable in this day and age. However, I think this will confuse and frustrate the majority of Australians. Australia is a big country, and the business community (and customers) need time synchronisation. The current solution of the state zones is the best one I think.

I thought you could time share in most government departments. Start early finish early?

Why don't they introduce daylight saving. Then they can use all the sun they save in summer, throughout winter.

Has anybody noticed that time zones are not set by a country's government. Time zones are based on a (approximately) vertical zone around the world. Should the whole world adjust itself to Flysurfers needs or should he/she just toughen up. I think there are more pressing things in the world.

Well, they really are set by the governments, but they do generally use the obvious need to have daylight during the day.

I think Spain is a bit of an exception, where the timezone does not accurately represent their position. I read that it was changed by the Germans during one of those war things, and never changed back. All this explains why people sometimes say 'in Spain they don't eat dinner until 9, 10, or 11pm'. No wonder, they are in the wrong timezone! It would be like moving our timezones forward 3 hours and saying we don't eat dinner until late.

Most little kids are allowed to stay up till 8:30pm. Its kinda funny that the grandpapa's go to bed before the kids.
