got car back. was a blown in line fuse as someone suggested, as a result of the faulty alternator. RACQ didn't pick up the faults so it went straight to toyota. I checked the alternator myself before it went but took RACQ word for the fuses. yeah it was probably wasted time with toyota apprentice diagnosing the car at first. It's about the third time the RACQ mechanics couldn't detect something fairly basic. Apart from getting into my cars when Ive locked the keys inside,

they are pretty disappointing
$850 all up. it's hard to know whether to have replaced it myself as suspected or not to, just in case money's wasted on parts not really needed
thanks for all the suggestions though
@busterwa - it's been quite a good car too, and been back and forth to WA several times, as well as up / down east coast many trips, and time on beaches. Never been given much TLC. Everything still feel as tight as a new car
i guess i can't complain too much about my VS commodore v8 either. it did 400,000k in 2006. Although everything that bolts onto the engine has died at least once, the engine itself and almost everything else is still going, except for the air conditioner, and it's been running LPG constantly since 2000.
