Just been pottering with the old girl and am hatching another plot!
"Kristina" has an "interesting" rig. Our main mast is 46' high, double spreader, fractional and has running backstays. The most interesting feature is that it was constructed by Wes Trinks using high tensile steel which he formed around a wooden mould with each section of steel then welded together. By shaping the mould he was able to taper the mast into a nicely aerodynamic section. In short it is a work of art!...Almost.
Two things are a problem; one being that the thing is rather heavy and the second being that at 49 years of age there is a concern that some rust may be eating the insides. I don't have access to an arthroscope long enough to peer all the way up.....so itβs just another thing to worry about......something I don't need.
I guess I'm in the market for another mast, aluminium this time and masthead rig. I want to stick with the double spreaders and want to run an inner forestay. No running backstays to set up on a dark night, short- handed with Tara taking the Dog Watch would make life more enjoyable.
Perhaps there is one out there somewhere that needs a new home! I would consider second hand if in good condition and I'm reasonably proficient with a welder if things need attention.
Here is Wes, putting the final touches to "Moomba's", ("Kristina's") main mast shortly before launching.....sometime in 1963. Beside it is the oregon mizzen.
