Dislocated my shoulder windsurfing a few weeks ago and decided to invest in a drone to keep me sane whilst sidelined from the water. Took it up to Lancelin to test it out. It wasn't a very windy day, which made flying pretty easy and managed to catch my mate on a wave out the back. Here's a video of my first flight

What a fantastic spot! No shore break and waves! I want to move to WA..

Great work and a nice perspective of South Passage. I guess it will look even nicer if you do it again on a sunny day.

Great spot.

No dangerous shore break at South Passage. We trade that for a long swim in if it goes wrong while being circled by fish with large teeth!!

^^^ you don't have to swim....
You can just let the wind drift you to the island - after all the shallow reef to go over, its only a small cliff to climb. Then, yeah OK it is covered in WW2 ordinance but if you keep to the paths its OK.

Have you done that Mark? I have thought about it as an option. But the reef doesn't look that friendly there when the swell is up. And then you still have to get off the island. Not many tinnies visit the island late in the afternoon on a good seabreeze day, especially during the week. So you would probably still have to swim back from the island.

Great shots, especially for your first flight. What drone is it? It must be quite an easy drone to fly? And you're trusting yourself to fly it over water all the way to south passage on your first flight!
I'd really like to see how it flies in more wind.

Your friend looked to be going pretty good for their being not much wind. Of course the angle of the drone cam maybe makes it look not windy.Any idea sail & boardsize?

Thanks mate. It's a DJI Mavic pro quadcopter. Folds up to the size of a small brick and has a flight distance of 7km (allegedly). It's pretty fool-proof and can return to its original point of takeoff if it becomes disconnected from the controller. Of course the wind is a bit of a factor, but I'm pretty confident flying in cross-onshore conditions as it's hard to get out but easy to get in. Tested it out at Woodman point a few days ago in 15 knots and it still captured super smooth shots. Sometimes the footage looks a bit tilted due to the wind but it's pretty easy to fix up in movie editing software. Anything over 15 knots would probably just burn the motors out as they are pretty small.

It was gusting to 15 knots out there. We thought it was going to be windier than it was so he only took a 4.7m sail and an 85L board. A 5.3m or above would've been more ideal...

Mostly like edited and "colour corrected" on a screen with low colour gamut. From looking at it I'd say too much contrast and black levels.

Who needs a drone? Just sail one handed while taking photos.

Yeah went a bit overboard on the colour correction due to poor lighting conditions at the time of filming. Didn't have the camera settings right either and tried to correct for 'glare' on the water, which made the blacks look a bit over the top. It's all a learning experience I guess. My laptop can't really handle the hi-res footage and also has a poor display so that might be my next investment :)
