I am sure this spot between Bundaberg and Agnes Waters used to be popular but local boy Jeff (Blue Severne) told me I was the first windsurfer he'd seen in 2 years.

It was great for 4 days with cross off in the mornings and cross- cross on in the afternoons. Quite remote but worth a drive if you are ever in QLD on a big SE forecast. I couldn't believe how much swell got in for a spot that is supposed to have no waves.

Thanks for the nice video. Brings back memories of sailing there many times in the 80's and 90's (pre-internet) when I lived in Gladstone/Boyne Is. It was our go-to spot when there was a solid South Easter.

There are a few fun wave sailing spots around Central Queensland that get waves when the conditions are right where there are gaps in the barrier reef. Have had good sessions in many spots along the coast over the years from north of Yeppoon down to Bundy and out on the reef. Most spots required a 4WD to access back then.

I too wave sailed and surfed the 1770 area in the late 80's and 90's and fondly remember getting Wreck rock on several times.
I'm headed to North Qld soon and definitely was gong to call in on that area again if there was any waves were about.
I'm wondering if the track had improved to "road status" either from the Bundy side to Wreck rock, or from the 1770 side since those day as I know my current car would not make it through from either end if the 90's conditions have not changed?

I plan to mainly base myself at Bowen due to it being known for it's strong wind strengths and then driving to Alva beach east of Ayr if the wind strength allows as I'd like something more than the pissy little wind wave Bowen provides.
Another find I had in that era was Forrest Beach each of Ingham for it's actual waves. It was possible to surf the waves here even when no wind was present. A real gap in the reef here where you could SUP on no wind days.

I did hear of Yeppoon area getting quite large wind waves hen it blew 20+ Kts but never saw this area with wind.

Any other gems like these spots where gaps in the reef provided actual waves (even if it is a small wave that breaks a bit off the shore) or spots that get more wind than the other beaches nearby?
I need one thing or the other. Both together would be ideal

You can get into wreck rock from the bundy side in a normal car. There is a bit towards the end on graded dirt but really nothing serious. Go through baffle creek and deepwater creek national park.

I think from the other side (Agnes Waters) you need a high clearance 4WD.

Hope you score some wind! I think further north might be more consistent this time of year.

North Wall at Mackay harbour and east point near the mouth of the Pioneer river in Mackay have there moments when the south easters are blowing. Haven't sailed at Alva for seven years or so but the sand banks have changed a lot and it isn't as good as back in the eighties and nineties. Long walk to sail if the tide is out but still gets swell wind the wind is blowing. Better for kiting these days or a SUP early in the morning when the wind is light and off shore. Check the sand bars at seventeen seventy for SUP. Waves don't have a real lot of push but there isn't usually anyone out. Point at Agnes can get a bit crowded.

I got kicked off the beach at Agnes by the life guard because he said kitesurfing was banned. I explained the difference between kites and windsurfers but it made no difference.

Did that happen at the point or down the guts (middle) part, and when ?
I last windsurfed at Agnes about 18 months ago and there was a kitesurfer out as well.
Plenty of beach there for every one.

it happened at the point to the north of the sls flags where the surfers tend to go. was about 2 years ago.

I was actually in the lineup with surfers.

Thought it must have been near the point, the wind is often flukey there too 'cause of the headland, so we sailed in the guts or wreck rocks.
