Hello Everyone,

The forecast for Saturday is showing good easterly winds and some swell so we are going to hold a wavesailing competition at Sandy Point. As you have been aware, it's been a pretty bad summer for wind and waves and this forecast is one of the better ones we have had so we are very keen to get another competition completed.

We will run a 'B' class with the emphasis on people who have not done much wave sailing before, it will be run as an all in expression session with plenty of advanced sailors on the beach to give any advice, tips and help you out.

If you are interested in trying out wave sailing or just want some tips and coaching then make sure you come down!

The briefing will be held on the grass outside the General Store at 10am on Saturday morning and hopefully we can be on the water and competing by 11am.

Any questions please contact Joel 0407 546 730 or Alistair 0439 543 741

See you all there

Regards

The wind finally came to play for round three of the Victorian Wave series!

Sandy Pt provided the strong turn out of sailors with a building Easterly and nice swell. To kick things off while we waited for the breeze to build, Alistair McLeod ran a brief beginner wave sailing clinic and gave some pointers on all things wavesailing, everything from what gear to rig, to getting out over whitewater.

The 'B' division was a popular class with people eager to get out in the water with Alistair's words of advice fresh in their heads!
They hit the water with 20knots of wind and a few feet of swell with everyone having a good crack at wavesailing.

Tom Rosoman got off to a great start catching a few waves early on and getting some really nice turns. Dave Walland's wavesailing is really improving as he is starting to get his bottom turns linked up and reading the swell better as he gets more time in the waves.

Lisa was the only one entered in the women s class, she sailed well and got some nice wave rides.

Great to see so many people who haven't done much wavesailing coming along to have a go, special mention to Ben Wolstencoft who has only been sailing for 6 months - he got out in the waves for his first time and managed to catch a few waves! Great to see.

Alex put in a great performance in the 'B' heat and sailed consistently for the whole 30mins catching some great long rides.
While the emphasis of the 'B' class is fun, overall best performances were awarded:

1st Alex
2nd Tom Rosoman
3rd Dave Walland

By the time the 'A' final began the wind had picked up to a solid 20-25knots.
The waves where not lining up well, and were quite peaky which made it hard to pick the good rides.

With only 5 sailors going through to the final wave selection was critical.

Alistair McLeod got some really good rides early on and secured his place in the final, Andrew 'Hock' Hocking milked his waves managing heaps of turns which put him in the final.
Joel Ryan & Evan Hawkey got some solid jumps and consistent wave riding which put both of them through.

Further down the beach Simon Hanson got some long rides which gave him the last spot in the final.

Andy Ackland struggled to find waves early in the heat which made him narrowly miss out for a place in the final, although a spectacular goiter attempt at the end of the heat got a few cheers from the judges!
Local Phil Vawdry also just fell short of making the final, he just needed a few more waves.

It seemed like as soon as the final started - the swell went flat with competitors finding it hard to find rides for the first part of the heat!

Hock's waveriding scoring highly with the judges getting long rides with lots of turns, while Alistair's wave riding also scored very highly with some really powerful smacks and aerials. Both sailors not managing to find enough jumps to score well in the overall though.

Simon stayed downwind finding some good waves while Evan and Joel put together a solid overall performance scoring highly on both waves and jumps.
Evan managed a couple of nice forwards and a backloop, while Joel managed to knock him off with a higher scoring backloop and a few forward loops as well.

Final results for round 3:

1st Joel Ryan
2nd Evan Hawkey
3rd Andrew Hocking
4th Simon Hanson
5th Alistair McLeod

After the comp was run, a few sailors went up the beach further to take advantage of a much bigger swell for an epic sunset session!
Stay tuned for some great photos!

Thanks to the head judge Brett Lindstrom, Jodie for coming and taking photos and everyone else for coming down!

Also thanks to all our series sponsors for helping us out this year, it's been a tough season with conditions but it's great to see some wave events back on the Victorian calendar!

Stay tuned for overall series results

Thanks to everyone who helped out over the weekend.

A big thank you to Al & Joel for arranging the event and passing on some wave sailing advice to the crew.

Also a big thank you goes out to Brett and the judging crew, it's not easy to watch the wind blow and the waves roll in without getting out there, thanks guys.

....from the "head judge", the wavesailing standard has improved heaps in the past few years, it was great to watch. Having these events is just going to lift the standard more, and important that you keep having the B grade.
It was pretty tricky conditions, we can get way better than that at Sandy. Cant wait for a comp to happen on a perfect Easterly day.
Also would have been better to get everyone back together at the end so that proper presentations could be done, but I guess everyone just wanted to sail (suprise surprise). Congrats to 5 finalists. Joel & Evan won it on jumping, otherwise the wave riding was very even, and Simon was probably the smartest going down wind to get the bigger sets and sailing them really well, whilst Hock and Al also rode really well.

Thanks to Dave, Ben, Adrian, Bernie & Jane for helping with judging / timekeeping
