Maybe someone picked it up, hoping to return to rightful owner.

Similar thing happened to someone I know coming back from Coles Bay some years ago. He noticed his surf ski had come off roof, went back to find it and it wasn't there. He thought it had been stolen.

In the meantime, someone else had seen it, picked it up, and was trying to find out who owned it.

Ended up back with him a few weeks later.
