I am very keen to organise a down wind race in Storm Bay and Frederick Henry Bay this coming summer.
There are quite a few issues arising from running this type of open water event. The main issues being safety concerns, epirb, back up craft, transport from locations etc.
I'm interested at this point to hear of anyones thoughts on this type of event, or would it just be better holding a 'fun' downwinder.
Finish would be at Seven Mile Beach. The start at either CliftonBeach or from Fort Beach South Arm(out around Betsy Island). Wind direction would be a Southerly type of sea breeze.
I'm keen but could use a rescue boat.
I could also empty the van and leave it at the finish for transport back to gear.
Sounds good but we'd need a backup boat and a track close to shore we'd have to stick to so we don't get too spread out. Be a bit of fun
Sounds great. Maybe we could approach the Lauderdale Yacht Club and see if they'd make a rescue boat available if we ran the event on a Saturday to coincide with their race day?
Maybe we could get the cheapest UHF radios and use those for safety?
Sounds like heaps of fun. I went from Clifton to lauderdale long time ago with Jason steel and others it was fun back then. Sounds like if we get the safety side sorted and we can go for it.
Good idea Buzzy![]()

a low head to georgetown down winder would be pretty good in a nor-wester, northerly
no open water, just a shipping lane to dodge
I remember the guys talking about a long distance run I think from Ulverstone, Johnny Heppy went in it got sea sick and actually spewed on his board
If its anything like i remember it would make the last dash for cash a walk in the park!.
Have done the Clifton-Slopen Main-Lauderdale a few times and usually in a strong seabreeze on the wave gear by myself (did get a bit dodgey there once when the wind died at Slopen!).
Once the wind swell was quite large in the middle and you easily would loose site of each other in the troughs ,i.e you could not see the land.
If conditions were similar to this i would take a fast freestyle wave and flat sail just for control as you are bearing right off the wind and often jumping over very steep wind swell.
would be fun![]()
