On behalf of AWA:

"At the last AWA AGM Ian Fox tabled the possibility of running the next National Slalom Titles at Green Island in Cairns. There have been a few hurdles to overcome but it looks like the main one (clearance from the environmental authorities) has been overcome and that means we can now give you at least an outline of the event and the dates to set aside (24-29th June 2013).

The issue with slalom has always been the fact that if it doesn't blow at an event it can be a total waste of everyone's time and you don't get a result. The idea with having the event at Green Island is that at that time of year when everywhere else is cold and windless, Green Island is warm and sunny with consistent 15 – 25 knot winds, which are totally conducive to Slalom sailing, making it a perfect venue to hold an event. We're sure many people will link the event in with a holiday to get out of the cold.

There will be a flyer out soon to let you know all of the finer details, but so far we can tell you this: the event will have both Slalom and Freestyle formats to compete in and everyone who is a member of a state or state affiliated body is welcome to compete. There is a local Windsurfing outfit on the island with local knowledge and support, so all in all it's looking like the “must do” event of the year.

Please spread the word and set aside some time so you are able to come along."

This should be a great event. The wind can get really storng up there and it's pretty flat water in behind the reef. A beautiful spot to sail, especially while escaping from a cold Tassie winter. I'm planning to go, so if others our keen, let us know. Last time I went I flew up with Virgin with two boards, three sails and a stack of gear all covered under 'sports' luggage (no extra cost), got a taxi van to the ferry, carried the gear aboard and that was it - I was on the island!!

More details will follow ...

Excellent, should be a heap of fun. I think there will be a few of us. I've booked to stay at Green Island Resort from Sunday to Friday, but will stay in Cairns the Staturday night before the event and the friday night after the event. Haven't booked flights yet, but likely to be with Qantas to take advantage of their 50kg free excess baggage (arrive saturday, depart following Saturday).

If you're planning to go post here so we can coordinate as a team!!

Dave,

Be careful with the QANTAS deal....i'm made inquiries about flying my gear home from Canberra to Launny in the past but have had to fly Virgin as the Dash8s that QANTAS usually use to fly into Tassie don't have enough space in the baggage hold for the length of boards.

Might be worth checking before you book.

I'd love to stay on the island but it's a little on the $$ for me, I'll add everything up over the weekend and see what the price differences would be. I've got enough Frequent Flyer points to fly Qantas, so the free extra 50kg will be fantastic. I flew my gear Qantas (out and into Hobart) in 2007 to Perth and the gear was only $40 each way. The gear fitted on the Qantas planes but not the Jetstar. Hopefully things haven't changed in 6 years (gee is it that long ago). Also I remember the gear was only $80 to fly it Qantas to Maui in 2000.
What size boards & sails are you thinking of taking Dave?

Thanks Ben, will need to check size restrictions, but I think Qantas and Virgin can do 3m, but not Jetstar (only 2.2m).

I'm planning to take iSonic 86 and 107 with Reflex 4's 6.2 and 7.0m (plus about 5 fins)!!

Hello you lot.

If I remember I might try and get up there from mackay. Some of the local windsurfers reckon it's a pretty good place to sail.

Mat Stirling.

Yeah Karen,
800km at av. 20kts would see me there in about say 30 hours. Easy!

Dave are you taking your big count down watch for the slalom events? Might have to invest in one. I don't know much about the starts for National slalom events, hopefully it's a bit more then 3,2,1 go.
