Went fishing today, and noted this stretch of the Huon just south of Cradoc. Looks like it would be super smooth in a SW.
Has anyone sailed it? The line is a NM.
And no, didn't catch anything!

It's a permanent bank of low grass, don't think the tide would be an issue.

Not sure if anyone has sailed there, but I drive past there nearly every day to work and have never really seen the wind get in at the right angle or strength and the hills on the Eastern shore are reasonably steep, so would probably muck up the wind if it did get in. Just at the southern end of where the NM is marked, westerly's can get quite strong, but produce a very short and sharp chop. It could be worth a go though. There's some good sailing spots down that way. I've sailed at Port Huon (just near where that screen shot was taken) and Steve and I have sailed down into Cygnet, which has some pretty good flat water. Police Point in a NW'er is probably the pick as the wind funnels through a bit like Dorans.

Yeah good call. Just had a look on google maps with the street walk view all along that road for a place to rig, and there doesn't seem to be anything at all on that side of the river. Either the road is elevated with a sharp drop to the side or the hard shoulder is tiny... The best place I could think of is the yacht club there at port huon








There is so much rigging space and carparking its silly, buuuuut its a good 3k's at least away from the run, so it could be a bit sketchy...

There is ample rigging area, on the side of the road, next to the water, just near the southern end of the NM line.
As Dave says though, does a good wind get through to it? It looked pretty clear down to the sw for quite a way.

I have sailed that area quite a few times in most wind directions and have found that any wind from north west to west shifts direction a lot
and is gusty
I sail from glaziers bay just south of eastys nautical mile line and have sailed up to that spot a few times in N W wind and heading south again
it is very flat but quite hard to sail back up again Do not know what it is like in S W but when the wind blows across the river it tends to lift
over the hills on the eastern side.
Its not a bad spot when the wind is from the north and blows straight down the river but that is rare
Daves right a good spot is across the river at Brooks Bay /Police Point, I sail from the Cygnet side off the coast road a few klms past Lymington
N W winds blow down the river and are quite steady without to much chop
Another good spot if the wind in S W or W S W at about 20 or 30 knots at Cape Bruny is Gordon in the channel
Just south of the jetty is a good spot and the wind is mosty consistent across to Bruny

Agree with Graeme, it's surprisingly flat water between Glaziers Bay and Police Point and the wind can be very consistent in a NW and the crossing is well over a NM. Gordon is very similar, but best wind is NE or SW. Larger seas here, but form long swell lines. Steve and I have been out here quite a bit, mainly launching from Middleton in a NE or Gordon in a SW. Will have to catch up for a sail some time Graeme!

Easty, asking me where to catch a fish would be like asking me what board and sail to use at dorans today....

We should pick a day when the forecast looks good and try to get a few sailors all out at the same spot (ie Glaziers Bay or Gordon)! Not that I've gone out from that side, but I reckon Glaziers Bay would be a better spot to launch from than Police Point.

I'd be keen to come along!

I'm keen, the place i sail from in nw wind i think is called barretts beach and to get there go through cygnet to lymington and the spot is where the road comes
along side the river

I'm pretty sure that's the same spot I'm thinking - marked with the "sailing spot". Be fine in a seabreeze as well as NW.

We were both on iSonic 107's with 7.0m sails, but could have gone smaller. Good spot for NM, 1hr, distance and 2-sec/5x10.
