Hiya,
Now moved to Launceston:) Am crap windsurfer - so wheres a good place to sail that isnt too exposed etc... near Port Dalrymple Yacht Club looks pretty good? I don't mind a drive and have all gear etc
Cheers,
Phil
Port Sorell is a good option if the wind has a bit of north in it NW, NE, WNW and NNW. If its SW or WSW then the east side of the Tamar is a better bet. Probably Lagoon Bay is the most reliable in this wind. The area inside the bay is less choppy and at half tide and below most of it is waist deep. Its always worth checking if the tide is going out or in. The incoming tide is a little safer I guess but the outgoing tide does give a nice kick to the wind in marginal northerly conditions.
Over the next few weeks the seabreeze will start to influence both the Easterly and Westerly patterns. If its WSW in the morning then by 1 PM it should start to swing WNW and pick up a few knots. Sometimes it can pick up quite a lot and a nice 20 kts can change to 30-35 kts over an hour or so. November is probably the peak time for the strongest westerlies which is awesome or frustrating depending on your skill levels.
The NE wind tends to be a little lighter (and warmer) and probably the East Tamar (like Kelso or Greens Beach) or Port Sorell are good options. Greens Beach is also a good option in moderate NW Seabreeze directions as the swell is small and mellow and the beach is nice and sandy.
Hi, I too am just learning, went to port Sorrel over weekend and got out on Friday and Saturday. I have a bombora capricorn and a mistral screamer but only can handle the bombora at the moment. Keen for someone else to hook up with to learn or maybee join the club.
Thanks for the info! Sounds good - cheers for the local wind conditions as well :)
Would be keen to join you Brooksy - feel free to email me when you are heading out, mainly ive got weekends free so that the plan once the weather looks good etc... email me on cycleodyssey@gmail.com anytime!
Regards, Phil
Hey Brooksy, I was out on Sunday in the channel. Wind was pretty crap but saw you giving it a good go. That was probably the worst direction for Port Sorrel. Hopefully next time we will have more luck with the wind
Yes the wind was a bit light but it matched my ability.
I haven't got planing yet but I can go all directions.
Trevallyn Dam is also good for learning but the wind has been changing directions every time i've been there so far.
