Got to love this place , so many options. Couple of weeks back Nick, Flecther and I thought we might check out Double Sandy Point just a short drive NW from Bridport on the central North coast. We knew nothing about the place except it looked interesting on the map and was accessible by 4wd...... Whatever that means. We googled images beforehand and saw a few cars and thought we would give it go. Anyway the place is amazing, was a great adventure. We had stuff all experience driving on sand dune tracks, fortunately Nick was a fast leaerner (I'm being generous). We drove in nick's farm ute which is pretty good but decked out for sheep rather than sand. The ute had stock road tires, we had no compressor, no pressure gauge, no shovel, no tow rope, no JD cans or flannies... No worries. In reality we were coming off the Easter break there were plenty of people around with serious kit if we got in trouble. Plus there is a guy who does 24/7 towing with a sign on the way in, so we just thought whatever. We only got bogged half a dozen times and after some local advice, a lot less pressure in the tyres we were fine.
Well the place is spectacular and has some awesome windsurfing. When we visited the forecast was 30 knots all day from the west nor west, swell was only 1.5m to 2m so pretty small. We sailed cross to cross off head high waves with 4.2s. With the curve in the beach you can pretty much pick your spot based on the wind angle, only issue being the swell gets progressively smaller as you head west up the beach which is protected by a long headland. We originally planned to sail the headland which has rocky point but the swell was way too small. So in short a great place to sail and you can get cross to cross off from WNW through to SW. Looking forward to the next session. Keen to hit it again and will be keeping a eye out for a big North westerly swinging west with 3 to 4m swell. The place will light up!

Looks pretty interesting. Bit more like Greens or Bakers. The headland looks pretty low but I doubt the CRV would make it a third of the way in ( It does have good cup holders but very little off road chops ). Well done on the exploratory mission, good to see you guys at Bell Buoy on Saturday.

Top marks for the exploring. How do you rate it compared with the Marrawah spots; Green's, Bluff etc?

I think Double Sandy could be as epic as the West Coast on its day.... softer waves but for sure great wave sailing. I will however reserve my judgement until we try it out on the right forecast. One thing is for certain the day Double Sandy Point will be firing the West Coast will definitely be a no go, likely massive and dead onshore!
