Looking for secondhand gear to get back into the sport. It has been a few years but I am really missing it. I must have my second wind I think.

Windsurfing in Adelaide is just about non existence compared to the other states with regard to equipment new and old. Onboard and the Strath outlets about the only two token efforts in the state for retail with the secondhand market almost totally going underground. The technology around windsurfing too has evolved so much that I need some advice with regard to what to buy in the mast, boom sail areas. I have managed to pick up a JP Funster board which looks good but need a rig. Manly looking at freestyle riding at this stage. Any comments are greatly appreciated...............many thanks in advance.

Strath Windsurfing Shop a token effort! Have you even been to the shop?

I think a JP Funster might be a bit challenging to do modern Freestyle on. I think you might mean you will Freeride sailor.


Depending were you are planning to sail will have an affect on the size of the rig you will be after. You will be on bigger sails if sail Boggy or Goolwa compared to sailing on the sea. Lots of rig options in stock at the strath Windsurfing shop all you have to do is ask.

It is a easy mix up to make. I was not fussed that you mixed up between Freeride and Freestyle, just surprised and disappointed you would refer to the Strath Windsurfing Shop as a token Shop considering the amount of stock it holds.

I suggest you give out some more information so that people would be better able to direct you to the right rig. Like: Where do you plan to sail? How heavy are you? What windsurfing skills do you have?

As I expected I was red thumbed by people who could not even be bothered to answer KOLoughlin question and people wonder why windsurfing is on the decline in SA!

Not sure that windsurfing is on the decline, still good numbers on the beach and lakes this summer with plenty of new smiling faces either having their first crack at it or getting back into the sport like our good friend who started this thread.

How is the growth in windsurfing SA members?

Adelaide used to have 4 windsurfing shops now it has one if it was not in decline the shops would not have given up on windsurfing.. It no longer has anyone giving lessons. I would love windsurfing to be growing in SA but unfortunately it is not. We have also just had a really poor summer season for wind which has not helped getting people on the water.

People getting back into the sport is great and keeping things ticking over but it is not the same has having the growth of new people that are need to keep thing going.

But I guess some people like to delude themselves...it will eventually catch up with them.

I have been told by people looking for lessons The guy on west lakes is no longer giving lessons.

AlexDO what item of stock could you not get at the Strath Windsurfing Shop? It has a wall of masts a wall of booms a rack of sails most board bag sizes a wall of harness like more fins in stock than another windsurfing shop in Australia. It seems pretty much wall to wall to me Sure maybe not the brand you want but you can't have everything.

I think you should be signed on as who you are rather than abusing the WindsurfingSA sign on.

I pulled out of WindsurfingSA when I saw the way it was going at the last annual meeting I attended. It appears the way it's sign on is being used and other goings on have proved I was right.

You just seem to get very defensive Gareth and unfortunately you may find that this then reflects on peoples perception of the business you operate and could explain the red thumbs. Personally i dont have any problems with you as life is to short for all the Bull**** but you have come across quite negatively in some points of this topic. Its great that you have the shop and make effort to hold plenty of stock and im sure many people appreciate it.

I dont know what went wrong at the Windsurfing AGM you attended, not sure if i was at that one or not but you have just as much right to your say as anyone else. There are no power trippers involved in Windsurfing SA i believe, just those that are passionate about trying to make something happen which is difficult enough when its only a small group who want to be be involved in making things happen. Sounds like maybe you feel your ideas weren't listened too, not sure but if that is the case, find other like minded sailors who can help support you with your case. Yes unfortunately the Windsurfing SA group is mainly made up by Wavesailors but that is not a deliberate thing. Anyone is allowed to be involved and participate and im sure any ideas would be welcomed especially if supported by people from the chosen discipline who want to help make things happen.

Legless, People are free to shop anywhere they like, so don't expect or rely on locals supporting local shops, 90 % of our poducts are sold/ sent interstate or overseas, so aim your marketing accordingly.

That's great why are they not doing it under there own sign in rather than WindsurfingSA are they even a committee member of windsurfingSA?

Interestingly WindsurfingSA like all the other posts here other than mine have not attempted to answer the original posters question about getting a rig.

I have no idea where that is coming from. The original poster called the Strath windsurfing Shop a token shop I challenged that. I not fussed if they shop at Strath Windsurfing Shop or not makes no difference to me. I am not being defensive about the red thumbs just pointing out that I do not agree with the system and do the same on other forums I no many that agree with me about the red thumb system on seabreeze. You where at the AGM, I did not say there were any "power tripper involved in WindsurfingSA" (So I am guessing it is something you subconsciously think). I would love WindsurfingSA to succeed and help grow the sport in SA unfortunately that is a very difficult thing for it to do the way the sport occurs in SA. Having a vested interest in Windsurfing in SA I deliberately avoided putting myself forward for positions in WindsurfingSA as I did not want it to be seen as a conflict of interest. At the time I also suggested that the positions should be spread out rather than some doing multiple positions which as you pointed out means it is dominated by Wave Sailors. However I decided if Wave Sailors wanted to dominate WindsurfingSA that's fine other groups of sailors were off doing there own thing with out the need of WindsurfingSA. The problem now for windsurfing SA is it will be hard for it to attract new members if it focus is heavily directed to wave sailing which is great for the wave sailors but excludes those that are not thus gives them no justification to join.

My final word legless - if you dont like the direction get some flat water crew together get on the committee and do something about it - power to the people that are willing to put in some effort - to those that sit around and whinge about the organisation - its a group of volunteer crew that love windsurfing and socialising give em a break

You don't seem to be getting my point. Whoever was posting with the WindsurfingSA sign on should have posted that comment with their own sign on. The post was not Windsurfing SA business. If they had come on to answer the original post question as windsurfingSA that would have been great but they did not they ignored the original post.


You have yet to answer the original posts question which would be supporting windsurfing in SA you rather sit around and whinge about my posts which suggests to me I might actually have a point to what I have been saying.

Hi KOLoughlin,

Well, I have tried a JP Funster at a demo day once. If it's the same model (it had a centreboard) it's a good versatile board that planes nicely from the footstraps. You would be better off with a sail allows you to do that. Say a no-cam, stable sail in the 6.5 range, depending on your weight. Not sure what is around secondhand.
If you talk to the local windsurfing crew on the beach, you will find them a friendly lot more than happy to bend your ear about equipment.

Regarding the remainder of the above.
I am on the WSA Committee. I didn't post the above but endorse it's contents.
Yeah, so WSA is an association, run by and for it's members. New members with new ideas is always welcome, and it is crying out for more people to step-up and help organise events and run the association. All involved in WSA put their time and money into it for the love of the sport. Like most sporting clubs, its usually down to 1 or 2 people who do all the work. Kudos and respect to those people for keeping smiling despite the knockers.

Despite the spite here Seabreeze is you friend, you can find all the answers you need. Are you up to speed with the buy sell and search mechanisms on the site. Don't be shy about speaking to the people at your local spot.
Gumtree is also worth keeping an eye on and ebay.

I didnt answer the orignal question because you had already answered it by offering your services at the Strath windsurfing shop and also advising that we could all help much better if we knew a few more details of where KO is planning to sail etc.

My perception of your responses is only mine, was just suggesting given other responses you have had and multiple red thumbs that maybe others have felt the same way.

You nailed it on the head about Windsurfing SA. I dont ever recall there being a big attendance at the meetings i have been to other than wave sailing group. As i said we would more than welcome representatives from other disciplines as Windsurfing SA. We tried to spread the positions, I only took on treasurer so Kym didnt have to take on the lot. Im sure any of us would be more than willing to give up the positions if someone wanted to take them on.

My guess is the problem KOLoughlin is having is that windsurfing parts tend to be sold separately so if you are looking for a complete rig what mast boom and extension will work with what sail. So if you go and have a look at the adverts on seabreeze in SA there are a few sails mostly wave sails and only 1 mast and one boom advertised (I only did a quick scan so my numbers could be wrong.)

So the problem with someone not up to date with windsurfing gear they are concerned that with the limited second hand choice on seabreeze that they will be buying all the rig parts separately and they have no idea if it will work together.

So based on the commits above "a no-cam, stable sail in the 6.5 range, depending on your weight" currently advertise about 3 sails 1 boom can't see a mast the rig size and 1 possible SDM extension and base.

So I guess currently on seabreeze there is not much choice for KOLoughlin in the second hand market. With the end of season specials at windsurfing shops it might be safer to get a rig that you know will all fit together and will not cost much more than what is advertised currently of seabreeze.

Agree. This was a real barrier for me starting out with no product knowledge. After nearly a year of combing the 2nd hand section on and off, eventually went to Glasscraft and brought everything I needed in one hit. Although, if any beginner does that, I highly recommend that they get a 2nd independent opinion before handing over $$$$. In my case, the salesman sold me a freestyle sail. As a beginner I found this sail very hard to use. At the time I thought this was normal windsurfing as I didn't know any different. Until I brought a freeride sail I realised how hard it was to use and how much it was holding me back. I don't think the salesman did this intentionally; it was due to his lack of knowledge and experience... and maybe not being clear on my experience. A 2nd opinion would have saved this from happening.

This Bloke was the last guy we helped out to get into windsurfing, now, he still needs some helping, no butts about it !!

I know there has been no wind on the west coast for a couple of weeks but PK I'm sure you could find some entertainment that might be a little less frightening to the kiddies. Can't see the ball either . Must have got onto that one.

Hey thanks to all who replied to my post. It 's been an interesting read !

I had no intention to offend anyone or any retail outlet. Perhaps I used the term "token" a little bit too loosely. I was referring to the many shops we had here in SA back in the 1980's and 1990's and the abundance of second hand equipment around.

Thanks to all those who replied to my post publicly and privately. I have learned a lot more than I expected and now have several avenues to chase up. I am most impressed with the Seabreeze site and all its members..................Cheers
