I'm planning a trip to Lake George in the new year, i've know it's weed fin territory but my Question is will i be able to use my Delta weed speeds 45deg or will i need a dedicated weedy.

45 degree fin will be fine.

Also making the trip in feb 2014 and nervous as to "am I bringing the right fin"!

I have a good range size wise of black project weed speeds. I know their have been some good numbers at LG on them but also seen some mentions of only having 40 degree rake.

Any advice from the local experts would be appreciated.....

I've used MxR UFO Wide 40 - 24cm (40 degree rake) no problems on a JP Speed 54 with 5.6m sail. You can use literally any rake weed speed you want. 45 degree just means easy starts if you stuff up in shallow areas where there is weed. Once you have any decent speed its rare for weed to stick from down to 30 degree rake. (eg MxR UFO 30 - 22cm and smaller) Deeper weed fins like 30cm plus I'd say would be more usefull to have 45 degree rakes. Hope that makes sense....

As PJ said you can run a 40 but there will be times that starting off can be a pain to say it nicely,
I only run 45s because that's all I have and its just a bit easier especially in the bigger sizes for old lazy blokes like me,
last year the water wasn't as low and it was a lot easier to use less rake fins.
have sailed with a Bear from Tassie here at LG before are you the same one.

Jimbob, no - I'm a different sort of bear... Sort of slower and just lumber around and fall over a lot, a good mate is coming with me to drag the averages up!

I have a go at both but flat water on slalom and speed gear is where it's at. Usual haunts are Port Sorell, Stanley and did get to grace the HENTY once before the sand filled in.

Will certainly be hunting for pb's but more importantly will be packing plenty of sausages and beer for after

we drink Coopers over here...............

they cut through well so yes they are good for the lake I got them from Jordans boat hire on the way down from Qld they are also the fin that Brad Anderson did the world record 30kt 1hr on in 2013 at LG.

I'm pretty sure the lake will be closed due to a kite festival.

Its a big lake, theres plenty of room for everybody it enjoy them self.

Cheers for the info. Im kitted up with 25, 28, 34 and a not likely to be used 42 BPWS (Length not depth).

Been a few years in the making so want to turn up with the right kit/correct beer and the rest is crossing the fingers!

So with the current chop will a 20cm delta be ok out in the middle?
