I'm leaning toward the starboard wide point 8'10". They say it's manoeuvrable. And stable cause it's 32" wide.


I'm 74kg. Advanced windsurfer. I can sup on waves but I'm not an expert. I can also surf quite well on a mini mal.

If you can already sup on waves then the 8'10 starboard is pretty high volume (143l) for your weight

I am 79kg and my go to sup for most conditions is 8'10 119l fanatic pro wave - have sailed it and it rips - actually planes on the way out - the all wave 8'6 30 wide 130l is more stable but struggles to get on the plane - too much area

It takes a bit of time getting used to a smaller volume board but they surf better - on smooth days I have an 8'5 109l 28.75 wide - it rips

To sup sail you need to be able to uphaul - we go out in less than 10 knots - sail size 5.3 or less and you will have fun

I am also looking and trying to decide between a fanatic allwave 8'6 and the AHD sealion 8'3. They both have volumes about 130l and at just under 80 kg I think anything bigger would not be necessary. I also need it to fit in my hatch back... I need to do some measuring but the sealion could win by default.

Guys, need some advice. Been looking at these boards to windsurf on not SUP, in 20mph and up winds. I have some Knee/Ankle issues and windsurf straps are not helping. I ride a strapless surfboard for kiting too and have no issues. So want a small SUP for proper windsurfing on in decent winds. Any guidance on sizes/ your experiences would be helpful.

For what it's worth, I absolutely love SUPsailing the 8'10" Wide Point and reckon the front footstraps make all the differnece.

I have a fanatic allwave, but looking to sell it soon as I purchased a pro wave recently. If you are more of a SUPer and this is your first board go the all wave. If you are more of a windsurfer go the sealion. The all wave is a fantastic first SUP board. Not coming from a surfing background I bought a cheap SUP that was 30' wide (I'm about 87kg) and did more swimming than paddling and nearly gave it away. Did some research on sea breeze and the all wave keep popping up so decided to get a 9'6" x 32" all wave. What a difference, could turn it waves and easy to stand on. Two years down the track I have outgrown it and gone for a Prowave which I really happy with. Having said that I don't really enjoy SUP sailing the all wave it feels massive and not manoeuvrable enough. I was thinking of getting a Sealion but seeing comments in this thread, I keen to give the Prowave a go with a sail attached. I don't know if a Sealion would be a suitable choice for a first SUP board, but sure it would be great as a windsup.

Cap' n kirk, how long is the mast track on the starboard, much room to adjust?

Thanks Dean, you have summed it up nicely.... I want to get right into SUP but knowing myself I'll stick a sail on it every chance I get. In an ideal world I would get an allwave and a large waveboard but the sealion could be the middle ground.

Mike, it sounds like you should just take the foot straps off a proper waveboard as I am sure that would work better than a Sup in decent conditions.

G'day Mike, unfortunately the WP only has one fitting position and I've found the footstraps work best as far forward as possible. I gather the dedicated WindSUP (same specs as the WP) actually has two mast foot options (and a back footstrap), so reckon it could be one worth considering...

Have you surfed it? Is it a good SUP?

How does it plane? Sluggish?

Do you feel like your going to get catapulted?

How does it go over white wash on the way out?

Glad you enjoyed the clip Yuppy, as I'm a big fan of my WP and reckon it's a really versatile piece of kit.

That said, I've only actually surfed it a handful of times and found it a smooth, fun ride - albeit quite "corky" in comparison to my Airborn (7'10"x30").

It is a good idea to upsize the rear fin to get a little more lateral resistance (I'm running a 21cm rear fin with some old FCS quads as sides), which does help the board get planing in decent wind.

For me though, planing performance is secondary, as the WP really is a light-wind wave machine which can cruise around the break in the barest of breezes and which will see your wave count go through the roof!

Never feel like you're going to get "flung" and if anything the slightly rearward bias of the mast fitting really encourages you to get onto your front foot.

Anyway, from the sounds of your original post I can't help but think you'd the WP and reckon that if you like SUPing it (are you able to demo one?), you'll love SUPsailing it!

A sup is not going to be a good option for 20mph + windsurfing! too much drag and mist dont really plane well. Starboard brought out a strapless board a few years ago, you may want to hunt one of those down.

The stbd atomic was originally a strapless board, but I don't think they sold many so hence the new ones come with straps

My take on it:

For me, if it's windy enough to be able to get a SUP planning, I can get my big wave board and sail planning too, so for me I don't see the point of having foot straps on a SUP. Being a Windsurfer first and foremost, I would rather be on my windsurf gear riding waves than my SUP, even if it means to grovel out a bit. If its really light like < 13 knots, then for sure I will Wind SUP. < 5 knots and its just plain old SUP.

However I can understand guys who SUP as their primary water sport would want to able to use it as a windsurfer too. Yup, seems like your into windsurfing more than SUP, so just consider what I have said above.

There is a large variety of gear, so it all really boils down to what you want to use it for etc etc, enough said.

i have a tabou 3s 85l and a JP FSW 101. i'm adding the sup for sub planning days.

My biggest sail is a 5.0m, I am only around 73 kg's I can get planning on my 5.0 and 92L board in ~16 knots

I am not at all interested in using big sails.

Yuppy, I have a SB wide point 8'10" and Fanatic all wave.

I like the SBWP for sup sailing as the front straps are a great option.

They are really inboard so good for lifting up on to engage the far rail,
but also for going out over waves, they keep you from coming up off your board
and also just for carrying board with sail attached in and out of the surf, using boom and front strap.
(plus you don't have to use them if you don't want to)

Mine has 2 mast foot options.

For the record, I've had both Allwave and SB planing, but they are both sluggish because of the amount of rocker.
Besides, in these conditions, I can easily be planing on my windsurf gear.

I SUP 'd a JP wide body surf 8"10' today. Same dimensions as the starboard wp 8"10'.

You were right. It was a bit big. Next I'm trying a 8"2' wide point. I think this will be best
