Just wanting to check with others on correct downhaul. im finding if I downhaul to get leech loose between 2nd and 3rd batterns that the bottom two batterns don't rotate around the mast properly. A bit more to free the bottom two and the leech seems too floppy to me unless the winds really cranking. Im running the outhaul around neutral where the back of the sail just touches the boom is this correct?

Didn't those older S1s rig on a hard top mast?

i have same year or similar s1 and use gorilla mast,,
twist leech off to length of first mini batton,,,
doesnt look like that,,,,maybe mast top is too soft

The first photo definitely looks like it is over-downhauled. Not only too much looseness too far down, but the luff sleeve looks far too flat. (I have a S1 5.0 on a MS Kitana mast. It rigs nicely and never looks like the photos.)

Try reducing the downhaul a bit to tighten in leech further down, but still keep it loose at the top. This will also put some shape into the luff sleeve. You want the front of the batten next to the boom to be just at the mid point of the mast, not way back behind it like the photos show. Don't blindly follow the specs. Use your own settings. Make a rigging chart of settings that work.

I have the same model 5.6, rig with 400cm G2 mast, i have similar problem about battens, i rig the sail similar to yours at pictures (+1cm from recommended downhaul, -2cm from outhaul). Sail looks bad but feels better in my opinion, i may be wrong.

Rigging and derigging is considerably harder compared to 2019-2020 blades and gators; sleeve curve seems too much so mast gets stuck, and mast is too tight with sail at boom opening so its hard to insert boom clamp in between.

The only valuable thing is the boom imho.

I'd say way too much of both down haul and outhaul.

It should only twist just behind the mini batten in the head panel and the next mini batten down.

Then the out haul should let them rotate just behind the mast, as the wind hits it the sail will inflate slightly and pull the battens away from the mast.

My S1 sails rig with about 4cm less outhaul tension that the recommended measurement on the sails.

Check out their rigging guide......even with a different mast theres way too much down haul unless you were completely over powered.

S1s haven't been made in a 4.7 size for some time, so which year is this?
That sail also has 5 battens.
(The recent S1 sizing would be a 4.8, and with just 4 battens.)

So this 4.7 must date back to when Severne masts were more hard top.
You've either got to try a different mast or don't apply so much downhaul - or maybe both.
You could also try sailing it with neutral outhaul to see if that helps rotation.

Any rigging guide from those using the current 4 batten versions won't help.

After a quick bit of research, I think your sail must be from 2012.
Here's a review of that sail, with some rigging tips - and they say go easy on the downhaul.

So downhaul is supposed to make leech twist just between the top two battens. So for stronger winds downhaul until floppy between battens but also use the lower clew eyelet and use the top eyelet for less wind and a tighter leech.

I've got an old 4m fibrespar RDM might see how it rigs on that, otherwise it make sense if the battern near the boom is about midway across mast as suggested, this would reduce the floppy leach. So ill try less downhaul and out haul.
I've got a 5.3 blade and this rigs completely different and needs quite a bit more downhaul tension just to get the top to twist of, which makes sense as suggested as being floppy only to short battern.
