I came across this 5.8 hot sails maui. The shape looks modern but the material doesn't. I have no idea what era this Is? 2005+? Hopefully someone on here knows what this might be.

Luff: 439-441cm
Mast: 430/25/21
Boom: 182-184cm

You could email hotsails and they'd probably tell you straight away - and I hear they are good at replying to emails.
This sail looks like an older HSM Superfreak to me.

Modern 5.7s and 5.8s are made to fit 4m masts but the luff length here needs a 430 mast.
The boom length also seems a bit long by modern standards.
The material looks like Dacron which also dates the sail as older. That material is good, and long lasting, if a bit heavy. So a sail like this stored away could be 20 years old.
But Hot Sails Maui also avoided using mono film in some of their modern designs, going against the trends. So it may turn out the sail is not so old, but a retro design. The Superfreak is still in production and is their classic/retro design - the distinctive PVC window panel gives it away.

It's a HSM Superfreak, year is easier to determine by the color of the sail bag. You can order this sail , from a variety of colors at no extra charge, graphics , like Mickey Mouse cost additional, takes about 3 months to get it.
2005 is a decent guess. the colors are faded, a lot, a repair patch of yellow exists just under the 2nd batten from the top.
its made of Dacron sail material. This is the original version, others are UL , ultra light, which has a lighter Dacron like material in some panels, much like kite material. It's not the ME, Maui Edition, the clear panel has a different cut.
Its too,old to be what's now called the Superfreak Classic. So IMO it's a original At some point in its evolution the # 2 and 3 batten from the bottom, don't extend to the mast, maybe 2009 or so.

Superfreaks have a cult following, they are light, soft feeling, very forgiving, last a long time, just not forever.

the 5.8 when new would feel less powerful , it would make the power of a 5.6 + or - . Very soft, in feel.

You sure seem to know your stuff forceten. Glad there is people on here to prevent me from making an impulse buy and overpaying on a sail that looks unique...but I guess that's how you become a gear horder(I'm not there yet)

In the picture it appears those middle battens don't extend to the mast sleeve. They stop at the light orange luff panel, just like any current superfreak.

I'm not sure it is as old as it might seem.

If the bag is with it there should be a bit of laminated card with a bar code, the text with the bar code will give the colour schedule and sequential sail number. If you have those numbers post them to the Hot Sails Maui forum on their web site and somebody will tell you the year.

You may be correct. It's 10 years old give or take, it looks to me like a sun that's been exposed to a lot of sun.
the UV resistance is a feature on Dacron as well as low cost, it's repairable with tape.

This is the newer Superfreak, the bottom 2 battens extend to the panel behind the mast sleeve. I think the orange one doesn't. I could find the year this changed but it's not worth the time. I will ask on the forum, Because inquiring minds want to know.

Cheers. I ve had many Superfreaks., and most others in the HSM line.
If inclined many get offered on eBay , just watch that they weren't rentals from Maui.

This is a ME Maui Edition, Custom, the colors are mine, the Pirate skull and crossbones sewn on at the factory.
its a 3.7m. Awesome control .

If you are interested in a Superfreak that doesn't like it was used as handkerchief by an allergy sufferer, try the Hotsails website. They often have decent to excellent condition used ones available. Maybe not as cheap but think of it as a "certified pre-owned" car from your dealer.

I take it dacron sails are more durable(more uv resistent) then monofilm sails? Are they lighter?

Aside from the repair, it's condition looks sound. Esp for its age.Its faded. Price, $50 USD would be close to value.

The HSM Dacron sails are incredibly light - my 10.0 Speedfreak weighs about what a 6.5 mono film sail might. Their wet-weight is even more impressive. You do have to like the very spongy, resilient feel they have. They take their time in responding to a gust for instance, but they pump very well. UV isn't good for any sail, Dacron included.
