Just like to say thank you for your hospitality to all the crew sailing around here especially Andrew, Gav. I am back sailing one day in 36 degrees with 2 mil shorty next day 4/3 wetsuit in 18 degrees but all good fun.

Imax1 the Sandstone crew will be your closest crew. Great bunch of guys. Great place to sail. Many options of water to sail. From smoooth to bay chunk.

^^Dude ya better pack a paddle. Up the passage is at least 39km as the crow flies. Lotsa mangroves. Thick oozy mud. 3 cartons if you make it in one day. Itd have Alby Mangels shakin in his shoes.
As youll be a Woorim local a run up the surfbeach in a SE would be fun though.

Imax1 you won't need to drive to far to go sailing when you're on Bribie, just ask the Pope and Adam. We'll see you at Sandstone in a few weeks. Don't forget to start learning how to drive really bad and not use roundabouts as intended so you fit right in over there

Buy your self a Bribie Harley ( mobility scooter) and tow your gear. Great news is you then don't have to give way to anyone, not on the road, or the footpath, or in the shops.

OK , so I'll remove my mirrors and blank out the speedo . As one should drive at a comfortable speed not the recommended high falootin speeds.
I think 70 kmph is good for all roads .

Where are some good launching spots ?

lots of options from flat water to small surf.

most spots depend on wind direction and tides. bribie is a rare place that works in any wind direction.

sandstone point SE. turner camp NE and bongaree SE, S or SW are popular spots.

northern end of woorim and the lookout to the south for small surf in N, NE or SE
banksia beach works in a NW.

beachmere and caloundra also worth the drive.

I think I'm more scared of mobility scooters.
last time I was at Caloundra I had to do a flying jump to get out of the way of one .
Im sure it was modified , Ive never seen one go so fast .

Your launch point will depend on how you like to windsurf, for bay blasting look for Turners Camp and Oxley Place on Google Maps to cover most wind directions and South Esplanade for low tide and S to SW. Woorim stretch and Red Beach stretch for small wave bumps.

I'm normally in heavy bay chunk with a sh.tty shore dump ., so I'd like to try some small friendly surf .
But I'm also looking forward to some flat water , to see how fast I can go. See what those outboard strap positions do . Mabee I won't be able to handle flat water and crash . It will be new to me.

Woorim has no real surf to speak of just a shore dump and even in huge swell the waves are not really rideable with the real thrill just trying to get out without breaking gear due to the nasty sweep running with the wind. The joy of Bribie is sailing the side of the island with the current running into the wind and there is some nice current that give some nice pressure waves. No better example of this is Bongaree southern end with an outgoing tide running into a SE wind. If it's a large tide difference between high and low tide with a strong SW to SE then sail the channel. Use a small fast board as you can hit ramps at top speed.
As for sharks you will see them if you get out into the deeper waters or around the back end of trawlers so stay away from them. You can always retire and head to Pebble Beach and mow the sea grass but do yourself a favour and get the right gear to ride the more open parts of the island, it's so worth it.

yeah the sweep is an issue.

we used to time it when the wind and tide were at opposites and if it wasn't working go to bongaree or sandstone point.
I am pretty keen to get to beachmere some day.

There are a few local conditions that can catch you out, but we'll fill you in when you get here. Generally though, the easiest/safest solo weekday sailing will be at Oxley Place Sandstone Point, but if there's enough wind to sail you'll rarely ever sail solo because Johnny B will always be sailing and usually a couple of others too. South Esplanade is great in the right conditions but can catch you out in the wrong conditions.

Give Beachmere a crack Gestalt, I'm not good enough to sail it when it's 25+ SE so generally sail local when it's cross shore NE or sometimes SSW but the SSW can be a bit gusty, however the water is swimming pool flat and clean with perfect sand bottom when it's a good SSW day.

You guys have completely forgotten Queen's Beach at Redcliffe. Best windsurfing spot in SEQ. Where all the cool cats go.

Yep used to sail there back in the 90's at Margate super good for bump and jump in macking SE winds hopefully be heading back down that way in the near future.

Trouble is Shifu that it's a 3/4 hour drive around the river and we end up driving straight past our beaches to get there ...................... and you've got traffic lights
