just finished 3 weed fins my version of fangy's fillet, 17cm/14ml/50deg,17cm/16ml/50deg,17cm/18ml/50deg and from the same mold ,the first pic is the smallest and the last is the biggest, hoping for some lift in marginal conditions with sail up to 7mt shallow water and thick weed

Good size for Budgy too I'd love to find a 16 or 17cm one that can handle a 7.8m without letting go..

Looks great Keef, but it's hard to tell in the photos, are your fillets concave or convex?
If, (and it's a big if), my theory is right, the fillets should be concave, to ease the sideways flow onto the fin. And I'm assuming the greatest flow will be around the thickest part of the fin, so that's where the fillet should be most pronounced.

Really looking forward to your test results!

decrepit the fillet is concaved but I'm not sure if you can class it as a fillet or a fin with a thick base, the fin itself is very thin so i'm hoping for some top end speed aswell as some early lift

Here's a close up of the fillet I put on one of my fins. Fangy's are similar.



This is what I mean by concave. It looks a lot like the old surfboard fins that were glassed on by a string of rovings.
It removes the right angle between board and fin, so the water that flows across the board and down the fin doesn't have to make a 90deg turn. I think this 90deg turn produces a very low pressure area at the base of the fin, promoting cavitation and ventilation, as Fangy's video showed. I don't think your fillet will achieve this, but your results could prove me wrong, then I'll have to do a rethink!

looks good mike, my problem is I haven't got a clue what makes a fin work so I go with a gut feeling and roll with it ,my initial feeling was to fill in the gap so I sent fangy a message and he talked me into putting the tail on the fin, my gut feeling is the fin isn't finished until I have sailed it and done a few mods ,unfortunately my test pilot is in Maui atm so ill have to be patient,
at the end of the day I needed a 17cm fin that would work with a 7mt sail, so who knows it mite be back to the drawing board

Cross your fingers for wind..It's not looking very hopeful at the moment...
It would be a pity to lose all your sailing fitness after Maui..

first test run today of the smallest fin and not the best day to test a 17cm fin with a 7mt sail on an 80lt board, the picture tells the story 31knt 2sec and 26 5x10, with the fin hanging on in the best of the lows and taking off and absolutely lifting the guts out of the board in the best of the gusts
the wind was a typical westerly and only came in for about 1/2 hr , so far i'm happy with the fin but will need to rebox further forward as the tail of the fin is sitting on the board , if the fin hits a solid object (like reef) it will drive the back of the fin into board(ouch)

fangman not often I use a 7mt sail at primbee ,if I do its with a 22cm custom delta , my main sail is 6.4 evo6 I use that with a 22cm mxr or a custom 17cm delta
one thing that stood out was the board wasn't crabbing as much going to windward or the tail wasn't washing out like it should have with a big sail
one thing that can be a contribute is the infusion resin I'm using, it has a very high wet out rate with max strength and no post cure , the bottom section of the fin is quite thin and rock solid and stiffer than any other resin I have used , theres still a couple of small mods to do and adding to the fillet like your fin isn't out of the question ill keep you posted

Stoked for you that the effort appears to have paid off Keef. You are doing way better than me; the second lot of 3D prints has now also mysteriously disappeared in transit - I am beginning to suspect someone is not being entirely honest with me...

that's unbelievable fangy did you have a transit n/o, where do you go from here and do you have to pay for the print and postage

The sender is not answering his phone, nor replying to any messages/emails. I reckon only a fish market rubbish bin smells fishier than this atm. Luckily I haven't paid yet. After the first lot went missing I was a bit cautious about paying until it arrived. At least I got that bit right.

Hey keef,nice job mate .
just noticed the fin is quite thick at the base ,just wonder if this would effect your speed .
reason saying I use to have a 40 weed fin I cut back to a 33 ,it still felt draggy until I sanded the thickness
out of it ...as soon as I done that ...what a difference .it was heaps faster ..

you where worried about the tip breaking off ..
have you thought of using carbon cloth for a little bit extra $$ ,after you find your best mould .
