The Euros have been able to go down to the local hardware and get an implement of environmental destruction since the Silk road to China opened 1000 years ago. All the rivers have been dammed , all the swamps drained, no stone has been left unturned. Bunnings has only been in WA for 50 years, there's still a little left, we've got to keep a cap on it.

There are plenty of suitable places in Australia where the environmental impacts would be minimal to all reasonable people.

Unfortunately for everyone, the extremists all have big mouths but they don't understand the natural laws: the laws of biology, the laws of chemistry, the laws of physics, the laws of thermodynamics, or even the "laws" of economics. There'll be a lot of hoops to go thru to get approval. Fair enough there's a lot of folks out there who'd go wild taming the wild if hoops weren't there. Imagine Rag tag bunches of rock climbers scouring the cliff faces, out there with the Ryobi smoothing down the easy climbs, excavating hand holds in the impossible ones......

If we just theoretically consider this possibility , I wonder what is minimal requirement for artificial speed run design?
a) length 1000m ? is it enough to accelerate and slow down ?
b)width ? 20 meters 30 ? 50 ?
c) depth 30 cm ? 40 ?

I also imagine that optimal shape will not be straight line but rather arc.If we could also lay artificial grass at the botto, it make any ripples and waves dissapear to create mirror like surface, maybe...

Thow in a couple of bags of superphosphate to tame the ripples. I've heard that's the mechanism for keeping lake George in tip top speed sailing condition.

The WSSRC specifies 50cm as the minimum depth, not sure what they say about weed? But you need constraints otherwise wet bristles with a track for the fin would be the go. Indoor windsurfers already start off like this.

Of course the other way Macro is to take the water with you in a huge old tyre. You've rolled an old tyre with a bit of water in it down a hill before haven't you? You just need a tyre bitt enough to rig a sail in the hole in the middle. I was thinking of googling an image, but look! my avatar does it already!

There is no minimum depth for WGPSSRC records. We consider it self limiting with the fin depth. Likewise, weed is not mentioned in the WGPSSRC rules as it is also considered self limiting.

It is interesting that windsurfing 500m WSSRC record attempts are now practically limited to an artificial speed canal. Not just because of the desired water state, but also because the only practical way to measure windsurfing and kiting speeds that meet their rules is with fixed timing gates. It is virtually impossible to set up such gates anywhere but in a canal like venue.

Extrapolating from that, there have been no WSSRC Nautical Mile record attempts by windsurfers for a very long time because of the same limitation of setting up gates. Imagine trying to dig a 2.5 to 3km long canal! Also, the WSSRC rules don't allow for group attempts at NM, only 'private' attempts, so you have to bear the tens of thousands of $ cost as an individual! The WSSRC NM records have been set by Hydroptere and then Sailrocket with Survey Grade GPS which is not possible for a windsurfer (or kiter) to carry. Apart from the French and Australia NM records, the other National records are mostly way less than 40 knots. There are plenty of GPSTC NM runs that would beat most of them.

Paul Larsen is some pilot! The all up weight of the Sailrocket is 70 kg, but when up to speed there's 700-800 kg of hydrodynamic force in equilibrium with the 700-800kg of aerodynamic force.

Whatever happened to the WGPSSRC records. No one seems to have attempted one in ages and I can't find them on the GPS-Speedurfing.com site any more.

The new version if the rules are a big update and include some more streamlined procedural options, new GPS devices as technology has advanced, and quite significantly, the addition of ratification for Nautical Mile Records. Also added is formal ratification for National and National Waters records and Natural speed venue records.
