Hi all, Im having trouble getting my new BGT31 set up to log data correctly - currently its logging data up until I stop for a rest, and doesn't resume logging when I get moving again. Ive searched old threads and cant see any mention of this, and my captain has checked my settings are all the same as his.

Yesterday I stopped for 5 mins while the wind disappeared, and then sailed on for a bit more before heading back into the carpark. The tracks from the BGT31 show the session up to where I stopped out on the water, even though I sailed on and switched it off in the car park. The GW60 shows all the session. Looking back on the past few times Ive used the BGT31 the same thing has occurred, the data logged ends when Ive taken a break and any tracks after resuming aren't logged.
Both files from yesterday are on ka72 if that helps anyone see what the issue may be.

Sorry to be stating the obvious but there is a minimum speed setting. Check that for starters. I have mine on 1knot so it records everything. If it were higher on say 5knots you might miss parts.

Otherwise you will have to tell us what each setting is so we can check. Tom Chalko's setup page link doesn't work any longer so does anyone else have a copy? It could be here in the archives if you search.

OK, There's no reason to have a min speed with the GT31, it's got heaps of memory, you don't need to save it. I'm still windsurfing at 5kts. That's just robbing yourself of grovel distance. But that's not your problem.
Memory Card
File size, 512kb is definitely wrong. it should be "card size"
512kb will cause a new file to be created as soon as you've saved 512kb. If you check the card again, you'll probably see multiple files for the session, if you join those files together you should get the whole session.

NMEA items should only have SBN highlighted.

External power mode, I have off, with it on, the unit turns on every time you charge the battery, no big deal.

You could turn the blue tooth stuff off, that's just using battery unnecessarily.

Looks like it may be the min speed setting. Don't have storage problems with the 31 so ok to log everything

Those setting are very similar to mine except:

Memory card: minimum speed is 0
Memory card: File size - Card Size

Setting: Bluetooth is OFF
Setting: Bluetooth Sniff is OFF
Setting: Speed Average time is 2 sec

decreps on the money I reckon
it has something to do with the file size mine are both set to card size.

thank you all, there's a few changes above I'll make and do another test, looks like file size might be the main one, (Mike I did have several files and couldn't see why, now I understand why) plus the minimum speed setting, Ive been doing some floating around waiting for gusts in the last few sessions.

On GPSSS when they load your data they chop off anything below 4kts regardless of your settings as they don't consider this to be sailing. This is why the distance readings always vary KA72 to GPSSS and GPSAR.

Also the default setting on GPSresults is 5kts. I always set that back to 0.

Updated the settings as set out above and now have the BT31 logging data correctly after a test run today- thanks again for the responses

Are the BT31 and Gt 31 the same or is the BT31 a new option?
I'm glad I still have 2 working GT31's and don't have to hassle with all this new stuff..

The BGT31 is simply the blue tooth version of the GT31. It has a blue case rather than grey. Identical except the blue tooth can output GPS data in real time. I use mine travelling as a Sat Nav linked to Oziexplorer, it works really well.

Please explain?.. I thought you couldn't get GT31's anymore?

The BGT31 and GT31 ceased production at the same time.

But somebody in America just sold some old stock a month or so ago, no idea if he has any left.

My first ever GPS was a BGT 11. Was a Xmas present from Dylan way back in 2007. I didn't even know what it was! He said I could use it windsurfing and he could also use it in the car as a sat nav which he did I thought oh great a tech present from Dylan that is going to get used more by him than me!! ??

Turns out I ended up using it more windsurfing and joined my local the GPSTC. Great fun sailing with mates and thought it was a great conceptcfor bringing windsurfers together. Dylan helped me post my first session to team challenge I think using real speed. I remember saying if I have to go through all those steps each time I come home from windsurfing to upload my file I don't think I could be bothered (I'm not technical or into computers or analysing numbers at all and only had wave n freeride kit at that stage away). Thats how the ka72 idea started.

Now onto third GPS, gw 60 which as been working well for me and still have no idea what all the tech stuff on the other threads on here are all about and i know aalot of people in my team are the same. Just thankful now to Dylan for buying me that first GPS though and giving me and others an easier way to enjoy gps windsurfing.

I still have my GT11 and its still running fine (not that I use it much anymore)

Wet miserable day here in NSW. The perfect day to repair the USB port on my GT31. A rather delicate soldering job, hardest part is trying to wear three pair of glasses and a head torch whilst holding the solder, the iron, the new socket and the board.
Any way it appears to work OK and is now charging again.

Both my GT31s are getting on. I am expecting to have battery problems soon. Has anybody had to replace the battery yet? Who has the oldest still working GT31 or GT11?

Congrats on a successful operation. I've found working on the DIY logger, using 3* specs from the chemist, so I can see the really small stuff and a vice to hold the thing in, to give me a spare hand, helps enormously.

A long time ago the battery on my GT11 only lasted for 7hrs, so I did a complete discharge, and recharged it. Although lithium batteries aren't supposed to have the memory problems of NiCads, this definitely improved things .
And to answer you question, I've heard of a few people who've replaced the battery in GT31s. Mine is still going since 09, but it hasn't been used much recently, only when I go for a longish distance. I also haven't done a discharge test to find out just how well the battery is holding up.

I 've had my gt31 since 2012 (before joining gpstc), used it for 462 sessions and about 20 thousand kms , battery still going well, I think if you can keep them dry they are great units. I also got a gw60 a few months ago, used it about a dozen times and no problems so far, I make sure to fully charge it before every session.

I have my original GT-11 that I actually sourced from Roo, shortly after he discovered them and realised their advantages. That must have been way back in around 2006??. Anyhow. I fire it up every now and then, just for nostalgic reasons, and it still works fine.

I have 3 or 4 GT-31's that still work just because I haven't drowned tham yet (Have lost count of those I have drowned. ) a couple of them are at least 6 or 7 years old

I find that charging them up immediatly after use and storing fully charged has worked really well for me and so far I have had no issues with any of them loosing battery life.

I have aso heard of a few people having success in replacing the batteries, I think this one was mentioned:

and if you do replace the battery, do make sure to not rip the connector off of the circuit-board.
