gave it a go , turned out realy neat. laying it next to an identical boom ive made it way 2 wide .. 38cm between the arms at the tail ..pullies/ss bolts/carbon n resin added up to no more than $100 .. took a bit
of time.. depending on how it goes on the water nxt one will be quick n easie as.. $5 can of black spray paint to finish it off..
balsa wood core,6 layers of 200ounce bi-axel carbon. so stiff it aint funny ..
Nice one Nick!
How does the centre of mass compare to the original? I am interested to see how the extra width goes with stance as well as bagging the sail.
as i dont have a formula board atm im hopeing some one will take it out at marmong this satday and tell me how it goes :) .. useing the 2 boom pieces in the pictures the modified one is only 20grams hevier .... picking them up thou and squezing the arm together the only flex in in the actual tube .. the plate the the pullies are mounted is solid as .. just need a test pilot now:)
Nice post... I've got an older 'donor' boom I could give this a go on, however can anyone tell me - wouldn't this stress the front of the boom being stretched out this far ?
dont think so .. only pushes it out 20cms past norm .. 2.5m from the clamp dunno wat degrees or how ya work it out .. ended up doing the same to a slalom boom ..dunno y , it didnt need it , got bored one day ... stuffed it up as it no longer fits my biggest slalom sail -_- .. half way thru a proto hydrofoil ..
glassed up the vertical fin this arvo.. the foil is finished for now .. untill i made all the parts up and make a jig to hold all straight and plum while glassing it all together .. all parts will be balsa core all carbon.. maily cause the balse is realy cheap and easy to get .. mainly uni-direction, with a few layers of biaxel carbon to reduce/cancel out anny twisting /worping action.. dunno wether this foil is going to be the smaller back one or the larger front one .. at 95mm wide and 10mm fat, 60cm long .. no idear how much lift it will create .. no drawings or plans to show just dodged it up .. anny idear on surface area/foil size to know how much weight it will lift at a normal/slow windsurfing speed .. ??
At 60cm...... it will create way too much lift.
That is more than double the existing foil size for foiling windsurfers.
Very ambitious project with no plans etc
