At 85kgs running a 5.3 in 15 ish kn seems a bit slugish, what size sail would suit and how much extra performance would I expect cheers ledgends.

5.8 - 6.4 on a +100L board
all depends on what and where you sail.

I ain't no legend, but at 73 kgs on flatwater I reckon a 6.6 and 110 litre board is sweet in "15-ish" knots. The waves though, a 5.7 on as 100 litre board is ample.

He's learning so I think what he is doing is just fine.

Mort try to not be thinking about runnign before you can walk. Keep using the 5.3 in 10-15kn, one day it will be stronger and you will accidentally get planing then it is time to think about smaller boards and different sails

Keeping in mind what Mark was saying about learning, which is fair enough, a good combo for me in 15 knots is 7m sail and 110 l board, 75 kilos in weight. If I was still a bit unsure what I was doing, about 6 m would be a better choice. My 6m is a go to sail for me, at 85 kilos something slightly larger may be better and yes, you should notice quite a difference.

As a learner don't get hung up on planning yet.

For the record I weigh same as you and I would use a 7.5m on a 110L freeride up to 15kts. 15-18 6.5 and 100L. 18-22 5.3 and 92L.

Mort69. How did you get on?

What size board and are you in harness and foot straps?

I'm a beginner 90kg and use 6.5-7.5 on a 220l board at 15+k planning in harness and playing with foot straps Going through the catapult stage :-(

I have trouble up hauling on 150l boards in chop so for safety sake staying on the bigger board until I can reliably waterstart

Cheers Jeff

Hey Jeff,I'm still using 4.7 its an old sail but seems to work ,I'm planing, not airborne yet in 18-20 kn,getting further back on the tail not quite in straps or hooked in ,just getting a feel for foot pressure and mast position my boards about 120l but its not specified I can up haul no probs but trying to get comfortable tacking, brought a 5.3 but can't get it on my old one piece mast, def looking for bigger rig but not rushing in,not ready to out lay big bucks yet, used gear is cheap just need to get it right, enjoying the progression can't wait to start boosting ramps haha.

Hi Jeff

I like you are getting started again in the sport - I am 105kg and have bought a 200l board with a 4.5m sail - What is the Catapult stage?

I am going to get a lesson from Suncoast sailboard guys to get started again

cheers
Morgan

Morgan, you'll know it when you get there. It happens when you have a harness on and for whatever reason your weight is too far forward, the sail just picks you up and throws you over the front of the board, hence the name.
