Too much sailing has dried my hands out. Going to dip them in coconut oil each night, getting that serious. Lost much of the grip on my hands due to the lack of moisture. Another reason to wear a wetsuit in summer I think.

If you soften them like that it will get worse. You need hard dry hands and callouses exist for a reason.

Acetone to help dry the skin into callouses, and superglue to fix any callouses if they start to separate away when wet.

There is a solution that may toughen your hands.
It's an old sailors remedy .....that I haven't needed to try I might add..
It involves urine and your hands....
Serious.

Metho is supposed to harden your hands too. Maybe after pissing on them you should wash them in metho, then acetone. Then since you have them so thoroughly degreased you have an opportunity to paint them with Plasti Dip - any colour you like.

It's ok petermac, my wife massages my hands in 'creme pour les mains, marshmellow' each night. Smells pretty too.

change the acetone for metho. Acetone is very nasty stuff (class II cancer agent) whereas metho's only moderately nasty

just use OLD SPICE.

its pure alcohol, dries it out in a sec. sure it burns like buggery but it'll fix the problem.

Sorbolene. Fixes almost any skin condition known to man. But it is extremely cheap, so you won't be seeing many advertisements or recommendations for it. Get one that contains vitamin E.

But flysurfer insists you are a bot. I guess he means something like C3PO. ( I can't see R2D2 windsurfing.)
So just give your hands a squirt of WD40.

(Don't thank me. glad to be of service pweet. )

If you want dry hands, then use Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). It's a solvent used to clean freshy flowed circuit boards. You can buy it from Jaycar, RS, Element14, but I highly NOT recommend using this chemical, but as a moot point, it is the most effective chemical I know (skin goes white instantly when exposed).

PS/ but I think IPA is less evil than Acetone.

I have always found all the old windsurfers hands to be very soft, smooth and tender.
Markie needs to trim his nails though.

I spoke to Peter Hart about this before and he has seen a lot of calloused hands. He says drying the skin is the worst thing to do as it removes the elasticity and the callouses crack or come loose. Apparently it is actually better to moisturise .

^^ all I know is at the start of season when I get the first 3 days in a row my hands are a little sore. Now 2mths in I have a few callouses and can do 4 or 5 days straight with not a thought.

Thats true Mark, moisturising them helps preserve them... it doesn't make them 'softer' just more flexible.
Chemically drying your hands is only a short term solution.

Acetone is a carcinogen and causes depression. I worked as a fibreglass laminator back in the 80s and we used to just about bathe in the stuff. My knuckles were continually cracked and raw. Just get some gloves. I use "BumpNJump" brand and get about 3000km from a pair.

Hmm, there's two parts to the conversation above. If you've had acetone make even the slightest amount of contact with an open cut, you might catch on to the side I'm with.

Acetone? Metho? Big horny calluses? I'm not holding hands with or getting a massage from any of you guys!
Gloves for sailing and Sorbolene at night is the way to go. You still get some protective callusses, but just small smooth ones.

I just realised that the worst thing about having soft woossy hands after windsurfing is letting everyone else see that you need to use your shirt to open your post sail beer.
Now that's embarrassing.
