Just bought one, 18 years old, but used only a handful of times. Ready to race.

What's the schedule? I'm Sydney/Northern Beaches based.

Cheers,

Hadley

Good Pick-up. Looks like new.
Head down to your local spot and introduce yourself, someone will be able to give you a hand, there not the easiest to learn on when rigged properly but are absolute pigs when not rigged properly. If you pick a windy day the locals might not want to spare much time, just rig it as best you can and ask for advice when they come in for a break. Follow there advice and coppy there rigging technique until you get it right. First time out aim for less than 10 knts, get someone to show you the crossover hand method and how leaning the mast for and aft affects the board positioning.

Thanks mate.

I can sail it, and I'm looking for local options to race it.

Dobroyd the only one?

That's a fancy one….mast track, foot straps. retractable dagger board, mylar sail……mine in the early eighties never had that stuff.

the mylar sail will explode like a chip packet with a bit of use, hammer it in the meantime!

There is regular Windsurfer OneDesign racing based at Narrabeen Lakes Sailing Club. They have a fleet of typically 6 to 12 each Saturday ranging in skill from beginners to weight division national champions. Briefing is usually at 1pm at the Club. You would be very welcome to join in and give it a go - we are keen to grow the fleet. Your board looks to be in excellent condition. Yes, the sail (& maybe the boom) might need replacing but we can give you advice on that when we see it on the water. Racing starts around 1:30, and we usually have 4 races of about 25min each. First race for 2013 is today Sat 5 January - hope to see you there.

I have an old one too, take it out once in a blue moon for the show.
They're oiled, not varnished. Still, after all these years, you want to keep them away from water when not in use.

Weigh a ton, impossible to tie properly and springy as hell, otherwise quite usable

Made it to the start, just. Thanks to the bloke that fixed my mastbase. First time I'd rigged it and way too little downhaul for the breeze. Also had a de-lam so had to retire from the race. Really happy with the board. Need to work really hard on fitness and technique to get fast.

Nest week.

Good on you mate. Yes the early Mylar sails have a best-before date it seems - they come apart after 20 years. You'll have to replace. Check with the mob at Narrabeen what's doable and acceptable for racing. I find not any modern sail works on those planks...

Fitness: you're right, these boards are very demanding physically, but rewarding as well. You'll see that the guys do a lot of farting around, such as pushing the sails and so on. This allows to use different muscle groups - as well as resting the arms. You come out of a session exhausted, but feeling good and wanting more for the next outing.

Have fun !

Hadley, hopefully this link will get you thru to Windgenuity where you can buy new WOD gear.
www.windgenuity.com.au/?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=20&Itemid=68
Alternatively some of us have some not too old WOD sails that we could let go for a small but fair price. Might see you at Narra next week.

Hadley, that board looks to be absolutely mint!

Delam in those sails is normally at the tack and caused by easing the outhaul with the downhaul still on. Tack delam can be "cured" by cutting the mylar off and buying some stickyback from a sailmaker and applying it. Note that we're talking dacron stickyback and not nylon spinnaker repair tape or mylar stickyback - the latter two don't adhere well.

The old sails will eventually die but can perform surprisingly well while on their way out - ask anyone who watched Rob Howard go recently!

Thanks for the compliment Chris, doesn't happen that often; the cheque's in the mail I hope you won't be too surprised to see me sailing next time with a new'ish (one year old) sail I purchased from Jorn. That old sail has delaminated further with the 'pockets' now filling up & holding water. Not a good look or that comfortable to practice with.

Temporary fix done, will source a new sail soon as well.

Chris, I'll come and join you in the Capital once up-to-speed.

hey Hadley, i just bought a second board, #1771, i think we got a bad batch!

the sail looked great and was the reason i bought the board.
first time out and it did just like greenleader said.

also; the centreboard has a crack that seems not uncommon, from the pivot to the threaded insert at the trailing edge.
i tried gluing it with a urethane glue but it did not hold.
anyone manage to fix this successfully?

Chris, we had 3 WOD's on the water Saturday and know of another keen to get back on the water.

Doug.

PS. You might need your speed fins ,better pack stormsail too.

Another tip - wedge your wally in some kids playground equipment ,38 degrees tomorrow, only take an hour to bend it to a wave rockerline.
I remember the PRO-WAVE model,with footstraps - thats what you want !

I got the board for $250, then $50 for the rig. The board is absolutely mint - not a single blemish, not even on the skeg or centreboard.

The sail died of old age, plus 20kts of unwanted breeze.

That said, it should be a pretty good light wind sail.

Amazing that we found its younger brother, #1771!

The" Take off" should be taken to lake Illawarra with its retractale twinnie setup and teach those steallers a lesson in their own weed .Also its no good for doing cool railrides.
Go with the wallie - the board with the biggest windrange and the ultimate one board quiver.

POS#1707 lives under the kids trampoline, the snails love it.

Stoked just picked one up for $50 old school wally in good nic. Can't believe how hard they are to come across.
I used to have 3 of them up the side of my mums out at La Perouse. Never paid more than $150 at the time. So much fun coming home from work carry them across the road sail for a couple hrs then carry them home 10kg heavier. Why would you want to go to a gym? (boring)
I work in the sun and hate sun baking.Best thing about the wally I can sail while the wife sun bakes and when she complains about the sand blowing in her face its time for her to go home and I can go out on the short board.
Win(d) win(d) situation

Went out on the new second hand wally this arvo at Yarra Bay. Got my $50 worth already. Must be about 7-8 yrs since I last had one. Pulled off a few tricks. Just like riding a bike. Bit rusty but had fun. Sure is a good workout. Nothing like that sore but good sore feeling.
