Hello, nerdycross.

As the wind is always slightly changing direction, a horizontally-rotating cup is better, compared to a vertically-mounted fan (see below).

Others on this forum have offered advice on this subject previously, but I was unable to find the reference. Lacking the reference, you might consider:

The Skywatch Eole or Skywatch Meteos, available here: www.instrumentchoice.com.au/instrument-choice/environment-meters/anemometers/outdoor-sports-anemometers.The Eole gives wind information whilst the Meteos gives the same info plus temperature and wind chill. I've previously used the Meteos (and was very satisfied with it) until I dropped it.

Replaced it with a Kaindl Windtronic 2 which has wind info, but not the temperature info. I cannot find a dealer for Kaindl in Australia, but you might be able to. Here's what it looks like: www.my-best-kite.com/windtronic-2.html.

You might also consider Kestrel meters shown here: kestrelmeters.com.au/collections/kestrel-outdoors-meters. Davis meters of this type are shown here: shop.davisnet.com.au/wind-meters-1457731231.

Cheapest of this type I could find was this: www.dshop.com.au/buy/digital-anemometer/AR816?gclid=EAIaIQobChMItqXEqOmZ6QIViYaPCh3SZwsPEAYYBSABEgJ0mPD_BwE.

Vaavud and Weather flow turn your smart phone into a wind meter (probably by measuring the sound of the wind as it drives through a cup or fan): www.boatingcentral.com.au/vaavud-wind-meter-for-smart-phones/?setCurrencyId=1&cmp_id=1618905075&adg_id=65361529350&kwd=&device=c&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImqiK7uSZ6QIVlA4rCh1YpQ2GEAQYASABEgIc__D_BwE.

weatherflow.com/wind-meter/.

Cheap and cheerful is the Dwyer wind meter: www.dwyer-inst.com.au/Product/AirVelocity/Windmeters/PortableWindMeter. Dwyer also offer other types of wind meter, shown here: www.dwyer-inst.com.au/Product/AirVelocity/Windmeters/.

I'm sure that other readers can offer suggestions.

I have been using a Dwyer for wind measurements since 1968. Simple. One moving part (the bead). I even calibrated it once. Very accurate.

I've been using one of these since 1983, haven't even needed to replace the battery. www.dwyer-inst.com.au/Product/AirVelocity/Windmeters/PortableWindMeter

I went full on and spent the coin on the Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station. Tells me everything I like to know especially the UV strength so you can judge how long is safe to stay out in the sun. It was a hard sell to the boss and she still shakes her head on the cost but I see her some times look at the console.
