Hello, nerdycross.
As the wind is always slightly changing direction, a horizontally-rotating cup is better, compared to a vertically-mounted fan (see below).
Others on this forum have offered advice on this subject previously, but I was unable to find the reference. Lacking the reference, you might consider:
The Skywatch Eole or Skywatch Meteos, available here:
www.instrumentchoice.com.au/instrument-choice/environment-meters/anemometers/outdoor-sports-anemometers.The Eole gives wind information whilst the Meteos gives the same info plus temperature and wind chill. I've previously used the Meteos (and was very satisfied with it) until I dropped it.
Replaced it with a Kaindl Windtronic 2 which has wind info, but not the temperature info. I cannot find a dealer for Kaindl in Australia, but you might be able to. Here's what it looks like:

kestrelmeters.com.au/collections/kestrel-outdoors-meters. Davis meters of this type are shown here:
shop.davisnet.com.au/wind-meters-1457731231.Cheapest of this type I could find was this:
www.dshop.com.au/buy/digital-anemometer/AR816?gclid=EAIaIQobChMItqXEqOmZ6QIViYaPCh3SZwsPEAYYBSABEgJ0mPD_BwE.Vaavud and Weather flow turn your smart phone into a wind meter (probably by measuring the sound of the wind as it drives through a cup or fan):

www.dwyer-inst.com.au/Product/AirVelocity/Windmeters/PortableWindMeter. Dwyer also offer other types of wind meter, shown here:
www.dwyer-inst.com.au/Product/AirVelocity/Windmeters/.I'm sure that other readers can offer suggestions.
