As i am just starting - what do other sailor like
40 knots with small sail
25 knots with big sail
is there a min you would sail
wouldn't pack you're gear in you're car if it lower then EG 5 knots
as i am learning i like 15 - 20 km/h 8knots -10knots with my 5m and 5.7m
I prefer about 15 to 20 knots with a bigger board and a 7m+ sail.
This is basically because thats is the wind we get most of the time I go sailing, especially with a NE seabreeze. However my last sail was in winds of around a consistent 30 knots. I used a 5.9m sail and 105 litre board. It was fantastic though I could have used a 5m sail and a board around 75 litres.
40 knots plus is real survival sailing and usually not that pleasant.
Ideally, 20-25knts with 7m sail/ 115L board, and 25-30knts 5-6m / 98L board.
I don't think I can sail over 35 knots.
However, just got myself a Starboard Start 210L board and can't even sail that today...
I'm just learning like you, and I'll sail in pretty well anything under 25 knts. I tried once in winds over that and was flogged big time
. Winds over 25 knots seem like cyclones to me, and at this stage are more scary than fun...lol![]()
I finally cracked this arvo as it was the 11 th day straight without sailing and winds under 10 knots, so I took out my only big sail (a 6.6 I got off Moby) and still had a ball in the 4-8 knts on offer. So I'll sail in pretty well anything.
As I only have two sails also- a 5.2 and the 6.6, between the two I'll happily go in 8-25 odd knots, with ideal planing winds for me (as I am a light weight) being 15 plus with the 5.2 and 10 plus with the 6.6.
You're doing the right thing sailing the lighter winds, as there's no point going out in the strong stuff till you feel comfortable with your sails and their power. But the time will come and then you'll be amazed at the speed, power and fun.![]()
When I started out I'd go out in any conditions I could, From sparrows fart to gale force winds. It was all about time on the water and I learnt most about sailing in the lightest of conditions.
Today......Not much has changed, I still go out in all sorts of conditions as I have all the right gear. It doesn't bother me if it's 5knots or 40knots, If I get on the water I'm a happy man.
I've had some of my best days in 5 knots on my SUP with a 5.0, 8-10 knots on a wave board with a 5.8 and glassy waves, 15-20 knots on a large freeride on flatwater with a 7.2 and 35-40 knots with a 4.7 and my Freestyle wave in bump and jump conditions.
If I had to pick one.......I'd go for 20 knots on a freeride board with a 6.2 blasting over clear and super-flat water.
A day like this one.......
Varies, usually dependant upon the wind
! Sometimes flat, fast, big wind/small sail, small wind/big sail. Sometimes like light 10-15kts, good for practicing manouvers, relaxing just cruising around enjoying the scenery, pulling up to have a chat with whoevers out there. Sometimes like cranking it up in 25+. Sometimes like a wavesail in moderate conditions, midsize gear. Avoid aerials, afraid of heights
.
I have seen up to 10m sail . what condition would you use a sail that big for ?
I been told best to get a 5,6.2,7.5. and should cover me
I like sailing in high winds . but windsurfing I like low win as the water is flat .
but with low wind I find it gust more and I sometime am trap in the middle of the lake and not moving and force to paddle in
Prefer medium to high winds,20-25 knots over strong wind which i consider 25+
My 5.7m warp with i-sonic 87 litre,34 vector rockit,awesome combo in 20-25 knots.
Medium/light 15-20, 6.3m i-sonic 90, 34 vector volt carbon
For light wind 10-15,Mistral 82cm wide with 7.8m and 46 carbon fin.
Sails bigger than 7.8m for me equal no fun as too heavy.
Strong to super strong conditions, don't like as much anymore, not cruisy sailing.
28-30 knots on either my 93 Single thruster with a 5.3 Firefly or 4.7 S1 depending on how consistant the wind is or my 82 Starboard quad IQ with the same sails. Either way if i'm using any of that gear in those conditions i'm one very happy little camper.
20kts S with my 95ltre + 5m sail or 23-25kts with 4.2m + 95ltre as the rig is nice & light and I'm used to the board so that's when I can get decent planing gybes!
Mind you as I get older a nice consistent 15kts NE with my 125 ltre + 6.6m on a sunny day with flat water is pretty hard to beat!
I go out in anything from 5kts - 40kts + ( gusty) but getting abit old for the big stuff and as a lightweight I get thrown around..A tea towel would be too big for me those days..![]()
grr all the 100kg guys are loving it![}:)]
40 knots isnt small sail it, survival mode....
10m formula in 10-15knots so efortless can go anny were u desire enuf grunt to get upwind but small enough to last all day ..
+25knts, 5.3m wave sail, 110L Naish Koncept
20knts, 6.2m freeride, 110L Naish Koncept (it's my only board
)
Just got a cheapo 2nd hand 4.7m for those winter front days.
Might have to look at getting a 85Lish wave board for those days. ![]()
4.7 sail... consistent 25 - 30 knts... logo high waves with cross-off wind and 30 degrees temps and sunny... ideally with sandy bottom.
If you know of such a place let me know. ![]()
