I am planning (short noticed!) a trip to WA from the East coast leaving around the 11th december and back around the 8th January.
First time over there, just getting back into my wavesailing after a long 10+ year break.
Any tips on the drive, which spots should I hit (thinking Lancelin, Geraldton and Esperance on the way back)?
Any buch/free camping tips around these spots at this time a year?
Would be keen to meet people out there, anyone keen for the trip and drive over from Wollongong/Sydney?
Cheers

You'll have to keep an eye on the weather forecast and go where the wind is. i.e it might be dead in Perth, but howling in Esperance. Best spots to hit:

margaret river
lancelin
greenhead
gero
esperance
perth - scarborough, little island, dutch inn

As you're a bit rusty in the waves, you might want to take it easy if you hit Margaret River, it's a heavy wave.

Any spots to avoid on your own? like potential broken mast on offshore reefs?

try this link I posted last year for 2012/2013 trip but didn't go.

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Windsurfing/General/road-trek-Sydney-to-Perth-any-experience/

I laughed at Mark_Australia comment after reading it again.

2012/2013 Summer ironically was quite good by NSW standards but I seemed to have untimely work or
family commitments on so many NE days. The horror!

I think mobydsic or Ian K on NSW forum said 20+ NE days over 15 knots, probably was at the airport.

The consensus is north of Perth for max sailing.

Yeah I think he covered the main ones to not sail alone.

best to avoid margs,
Never windy, lots of sharks, good place to break masts. the others are all great though

Tip on the Drive, fill up at every station after S.A and make sure you fill your ipod with tunes, its a long freakin way, make sure you have a look at the bite, awesome.

Getting back into waves? drive straight to Gero avoid Margs unless you like swimming and rocks..

Get a better car than the sh1t boxes you have driven ever since you've lived in Australia.
