um yeah have to say I am not convinced that golf ball thing is helping. better off (for the vulcan) just getting a plank of wood and bolting 3 footstraps down in the right place. at least then it can leave the ground and you can practice the pop. I think the golf ball thing is more useful for gybes and tacking.
as established what your doing there is sort of a switch vulcan, or half puneta (without a pop), which is actually a counting move in womens freestyle. for vulcan need to start with your feet regular and land switch. the best thing to do on the water until your comfortable with the whole jumping thing is to get really good at sailing switch in the straps (not planing or planing)... this is the single most useful skill when learning the vulcan. then once you can do the vulcan on land just go smash it out 1000 times leaning forward as far as possible until you land one.
recommend a copy of tricktionary also as this has lots of lightwind **** to practice which although it might not be cool, it really does help.
Also if it makes you feel any better I remember building something similar to learn on at uni!!

Good tip albentley
I made this plank. Will it do the trick?
