So we've arrived here on the North Shore of Maui for a few weeks of sailing and relaxing with the family, and now we find there are not one, but two separate hurricanes heading our way!

The locals are battening things down, there a big queues at Costco for tinned food etc, they have no bottled water left, and Neil Pryde have sold right out of 3.2s

After five days of perfect conditions, things are still pretty normal at the moment but may get ugly tomorrow evening and again on Sunday. Our house is right on the beach at Camp One and wouldn't be more than 2m above sea level so a sea surge may be the biggest danger for us. The Big Island seems sure to get hit pretty hard, but with the storms approaching from the South East, hopefully this area will be sheltered by both the Big Island and also Haleakala.

Will post some updates when / if anything happens, subject to internet of course.

Aaah and to think we had our first seabreeze here on Tues arvo. Proper easterly all day, then the offshore waned off and I was thinking how late spring it felt (26deg too ), then southerly in mid arvo.

That makes me feel happy

They are fairly weak hurricanes (cyclones) by Northern Australian standards, but I would be planning for the worst if I was you. Staying in a place that is 2m above sea level through a hurricane - even for a catagory 1 hurricane - is playing with fire IMO, so find out where your closest hurricane shelter is and make a plan to get there before the hurricane hits.

The big island will cop it this afternoon, we'll get it around midnight, right on high tide at 11:54pm. Luckily tonight's high tide is relatively low.
Maui's only under a storm warning, which will still be "exciting", but I think we'll lose a lot more sand at Sprecks, and there's not a lot left to lose.

Not a lot to report at the moment; just an ordinary day but very few out sailing in around 18 knots. Nothing looks unusual except it's is way more humid than usual. The storm should hit around 9pm.

It's 4pm now and Craig has announced it's time to crack a coldy!

Just got back from Flatbread in Paia - last big meal and all set for the night. Deb's sorted with G & T and there's plenty of emergency beer in the fridge.
The sailing's been awesome (gpstc).

In all seriousness though guys, I've been in hurricanes before and jn1 has got it right.

Make friends with the worse case scenario, so if it does all turn ugly you know what to do and how to do it.

Pack one backpack only with your passports, cash, first aid kit, phone and water etc. So if you have to, you outta there in seconds.

Don't just think about the hurricane either, the next day / days can be a struggle as well.

Remember that you won't be the only ones panicking, so getting anywhere quickly will be hard. You think the Hana Hwy is busy on a normal day? chuck in a little panic a couple of prangs and the only way out to salvation from Sprecks it not an option.

I wouldn't be hitting too many of those beers if I were you either, you'd want to stay sharp.

I'm probably carrying on but I've been involved in bad decisions when serious weather hit and it isn't something I like to talk about much now.

You'll be fine, just be ready.

Hopefully you can all laugh at me come Monday.

Quick question AUS1111, what is the normal tide variation at your location ?. Is it about 2 metres from low tide to high tide ?, or is it more than this ?

No it's less than one metre mostly. The water is very low at the moment and the breeze has kicked up to around 30 - still only normal trades.

Looking at the satellite and radar images, the storm looks to be breaking up as it hits the big peaks on the Big Island. There is a lot of rain elsewhere on Maui apparently but we are very much in the lee of Haleakala here, so all's good so far.

No probs - all I can say is Yawn ….it hasn't rained here but it's overcast and the breeze is just the normal trade direction and fairly strong- maybe 35 knots. We should get some good sailing in today

Hurricane Iselle has weakened to a tropical storm and seems to have passed well to the south of Maui. I believe there has been a lot of rain elsewhere on he island.

Julio is on track to pass to our North on Sunday / Monday, so we''re hoping for some swell from this. You'll be fine!

I was on maui around 2000 when we were going to be hit by "the biggest hurricane in 80 yrs!!!".............. All we got was ****e trades and abit of rain for a day. Bit of a let down really. But there was all the usual panic buying of food and water ect. I thinks it's just how they clear the Costco shelves of all the older food.

The Hurricane was a bit of a fizzer last night(not so unahappy about that) I think the biggest gust at the airport was early morning around 5 or 6am in the low 40's(knts).

I thought my ribs where finebefore I left Sydney, had been back at the gym doing light weights routine, but was in real pain on the first days sailing at Maui. Trying to water start on my Port tacks and even plain sailing on that tackwas so painfull. Had to pack it in real early.
The next day was just not on for me as my ribs were in a fair bit of pain all over again.
The third day was a little better and gave it another shot, I was sailing through the pain out to just before the breakers, but still the pain doing anything on the port tack was overwhelming but still managed to get a few hours in on a 90l fsw and Ezzy panther 4.1. Such an amazing place to sail! Only managed to spot one turtle to Mikes 17 odd.

Hasn't really been sail-able since. Tomorrow our last day isn't looking good at the moment.
