To keep me entertained during the winter, I am planning to give one of my windsurf boards a makeover using the design of the 1990's Fanatic Mosquito. Some of you may remember the design.

Based on earlier posts I decided to get some Accrylic spray paint in an automotive shop plus some clear coat on top.

My question: Is the clear coat required to protect the paint below or is the main function to prepare the grip (i hear castor sugar is the way to go, right?)

This will be my first paint job, so I hope it does not turn out as a dog's breakfast...

Don't know the answer to your question, but I can't wait to see the result! What a cool idea. And the Mosquito still is one of my all time favorite designs.

I had the Rat of the same generation, not sure I would want to relive those graphics But if your after a challenge.

it kinda does both, protects for paint job, help stop scratching the rails and acts as a binder for the non slip. Most use a 2k polyurethane clear spray or hand brush/roller a two pack polyurethane clear. I've used the brush with great and had good results.Polyurethane is tough and UV resistant.

lots have used sugar with good results. I use a polypropylene non slip dust, same as most manufacturers, the finish is great, last for ages and it doesn't attract ants/wasps. International Ltd do a good non slip, but there are plenty of other brand around.

If you search this forum, you'll find tons of useful info on board paint jobs, I've had loads of great advice on here to save cock ups.

For an entire board I use a Marine coating, that's single stage, and a compressor. I think some auto paint is LACQUOR,which I stay away from on boards. I can't ever remember , but enamel or LACQUOR react to each other, blisters, so you could have issue with existing paint, try first before you invest in auto paint.
i don't do a clear coat.
For smaller areas I use spray shaker cans, I use the better products, how it covers and actually sprays with different nozzles, is worth the extra dollar or so. I use primer .
you won't get over a large area the even coverage of a spray gun/ compressor. With spray cans you can sand after to get a better look.
I say go spray cans.

Great advice everyone. I'll keep you posted on progress, will probably take a while altogether.
